Bad odor When I open my front-loading washer, I get a knock-me-over bad smell.... maybe stale wash water? Is is possible that it isn't draining completely from my last wash? Otherwise, the washer appears to be working properly. Thanks for any suggestions..

Thanks for your suggestion. I should have mentioned that I did a full wash with no clothes, hot cycle with bleach. It helped only for the day. Next day, smell was back.

This is the fix for the HE3T Sears front loading washing machine with a bad odor problem. We HAD this same problem but now it is fixed. You don't need to call the repair man, it's just a waste of time, money and endless frustration. Tools: 9/32 socket or T-20 torx head bit. Bunch of rags you don't want when you're all finished. *****UN-PLUG THE WASHER****** Lay on the floor in front of the washer and look under the lower panel. You will see three silver colored torx head screws, one on the left, right and center. Loosen these up with your socket or torx head wrench. Remove the lower front cover and set it aside. See all the wires? Did you make sure to UN-PLUG the washer? Good. Now look at the center of the bottom of the washer. You will notice a white cylindrical contraption. This is a drain trap where all of the junk from your washer gets hung up so it won't clog up the water pump that discharges the water from your washer. On the front of this drain trap is an access cap. BEFORE you open this place the rags under the trap, along the sides and under the washer. Trust me, you'll thank me later. Now open the drain trap access cap by turning it counter clockwise. Be prepared for some smelly water to come out, probably 1-2 cups worth. Once the water is drained, pull the trap completely out. You'll find the reason your washer stinks in the trap. We had a blob of black goo and a security label from an article of clothing we bought. That was the culprit. The drain trap was "trapping" all of this junk and getting real funky. Now clean the drain trap out with hot soapy water and a little bleach. Clean out the cylinder where the drain was. Wipe it out with a rag soaked in bleach and soap. Once everything is clean, replace the drain trap and tighten it down. Do not over tighten this or the seal may leak. Replace the front cover and the three torx head screws. Plug the washer back in. Run the washer through the SANITARY CYCLE with bleach. Your problem is solved

Another solution if the cleaning the drain trap doesn't work is to clean the inside of the rubber door bellow (boot). It commonly collects and holds small items (like socks and underwear) and soap deposits that start to mildew and smell. It's a good idea to check in and around the bellow after each wash for loose items. Wipe the area clean about once a week with a soft cloth to get rid of standing water and soap deposits. Last of all, leave the door cracked open when not in use so the door area can dry. I hope this helps.

Try running the machine through with no clothes, and not much detergent in on the longest, hottest cycle it will do. Washing at 30 or 40 C is economical and kind to delicate clothes, but it isn't always enough to carry dirty detergent residue out the machine afterwards. After a while, this accumulates and turns into a dirty grey sludge. A.

How do I remove odor from duet front load washer?

Assuming the odor is not a burning rubber smell or some other type of odor caused by a mechanical malfunction:

Remove the bottom of the washer (three screws I believe and above the drawer if you have one) and then open up the drain pump catch and clean it. You may want to put down some towels or even a bowl to catch water that will spill out. There are videos on how to clean this on youtube "Whirlpool Duet Water Pump Drain Catch". I believe this will solve the problem.

You say washer fills and then you say no water is entering the washer?? Burning smell is most likely motor overheating due to maybe something stuck in drain Pump.

Smell of stale water from Avanti compact washer

It may not be draining very well.

I have a front load washer and run a cycle of a few cups of bleach through mine every couple months.

I also add vinegar to most washes but that's due to my teenage son's athletic wear.

Both those things do the trick.

You shoudl probably check the mechanics as well but the above is a stop gap.

My washing smells bad

Water maybe stale and mold maybe building inside the seal for the door. Use bleach water and a washrag and clean the seal and run a just bleach and soap load through the washer on its hottest setting to kill anything you can reach or wipe down. Do this whenever you feel its not clean to your standards.

Stale odor within tub

Front loaders are known for building up mold and the smell.
It’s caused by using liquid detergent which is made from animal fat. Use powder. And use the minimum amount.
It’s caused by using fabric softener. Dilute it 50/50 with water.
It’s caused by the water remaining in the tub between washes. Leave the door open to allow it to dry. .
Pull the rubber door seal back and clean the mold off .
Affresh is recommended by some manufacturers. You run it through a wash cycle with it.

There is a smell of stale water in my machine and it taints the laundry, I have put a sink unblocker in the waste pipe but it hasnt helped

run your washer once on a qick cycle with bleach and afterwards and after every load leave the door open. the smell is mildew which is common with all front loaders. if you leave the door open the moisture will dry and your odor problem will go away.

My GE Front load washer (WBVH6240) has an odor that smells like mildew in it. If the is left closed the odor is really bad. Do you know how to fix this or what is comes from?

run a empty cycle with bleach on whites/ sanitize. clean boot (rubber gasket at door) with bleach or other cleaner inside especially at bottom, make sure 3 holes at bottom are clear.
this may take multiple cycles to rid of odor.
For maintenance, you should wipe excess water from boot after last load, and check lower drain holes. Once a month wipe boot with windex or other. and run cleaner cycle (empty) newer machines have a special clean washer cycle. (6240 doesnt).
Also clean your drain pump filter at bottom front behind access panel.
If boot is really bad , replace.
