I love my new Nikon D90 and had taken great pictures with it (it works well), but:
1) - sometimes, while the camera is set on AUTO mode, i can't take a picture. the system does not autofocus. it happens most of the time when i need to take a picture very quickly.
I get on the lower part of the screen F- - and on its right side {r13}. what is this r 13? what am i doing wrong? how can solve the issue.
and press on the "shutter" /button to take the pixcture but nothing happens other than this r13 blinking.
2) Where can I get an extended detailed list of troubleshooting (with answers) to my Nikon D90?
3) will i be able to use the old Nikon zoom that are 15 years old? on my new D90?

You just found the Nikon D90 F-- error message solution!
I had the same problem with the Nikon d90 F-- error message which drove me nuts!
I called Nikon, they walked me through a lengthy reset procedure which didn't work. After spending a few hours researching online, I found the answer.
It is not the memory card or nor a defective camera body. The lens does not need to be rechipped.
The F-- error means the camera is unable to communicate with the lens and is caused by a poor connection between the ground contact pin on the lens and the metal mounting ring on the camera. Most people buy the camera, install the lens once and then encounter the error. This one time lens installaiton does not give the contact point a chance to seat itself properly. You will find that if you hold down the lens release button and twist the lens as if to remove and reinstall the lens about 10 times that the problem will disappear. You don't even have to actually pull the lens away from the body, just press the release button and twist on and off and allow the friction to provide a better electrical contact.
Too bad Nikon doesn't tell their customers about this simple fix. Other than that, great camera. Good luck.

Now reading this forum after experiencing same problem. I did exactly the same, you found and it works, before reading the forum. I am happy reading this here, because I was thinking it is just happening to me. But if you look from other perspective, buying not so cheap camera and doing this trics from time to time, so you can make a photo when you need it, it's not very professional. I would say it's a general bug and nikon should report it. Br grega

I had this same problem with mine for weeks after I got it and it was driving me insane! Then, a friend said that the lens might not be on properly so I removed the lens and re-attached it- and voila, problem solved! I had the same issue where the info panel said F-- and depressing the button did nothing. So, I'd suggest looking at your lens, detach it, make sure there is no dirt or anything where it attaches and re-attaching it very carefully. I hope this helps!!!
R13 means that in the current mode you are shooting, you can take 13 or r_ _ shots in continuous mode before the memory card and the link to read the photos gets bogged down.
I currently live in Switzerland and am lucky enough to have Nikon just down the road with a service department - drop in style.
The f-- error which may then lead to err and other abnormalities may be caused by dirt during production. The service rep took the lens, cleaned the connector (silver little bump) and it appears to be working fine...perhaps your local retailer can do this for you if Nikon is not near you.
I had the same problem and I didn't know what the problem was and was desperate to take photos as I was on the Great Wall of China. Luckily when I tried manual mode it worked. Later when I looked up the manual it said that the F-- means no lense attached or non-CPU lens attached and the solution is to use the camera in manual mode, so I came across the solution by chance. After a while the problem went away and then I discovered that when it reoccurred I was able to get rid of the error by rotating the lense slightly. I was thinking I would have to get this problem repaired but it seems OK now so perhaps there was a bit of dust causing the problem as indicated above.
I bought the D 90 a month ago and it was not always taking pictures, twice while on a shoot. I called Nikon and they told me it is the contact between the lens and the body to clean it with an eraser. I have not tired it yet (this was yesterday) but I see this is a common problem and I am hoping it does work, sounds like it may. They also told me I could try one of my other lenses and see if it still does it. If not, it is the lens.
I have a D90.One night I took my camera quickly from inside the house :temp 78 F humidity 45% to the balcony(temp:42 hum 80%) to shoot pictures of the moon ,after the first picture the camera would not work and a "err" message came up.The following night same incident with temperature drop and humidity up to 80% this time controls would not work.Took the camera indide the house and after 5 minutes worked normally . Conclusion : the nikon D90 is VERY sensitive to temp drop (even 30 degrees) and specially increase in humidity up to 70 or 80 % it seems that the electronics go"haywire".
otherwise with normal temp and no change in humidity my camera works great!!

I HAVE A D90 JUST BOUGHT A MONTH AGO ,AND I LEFT IT IN THE CAR FOR 2 COLD DAYS AND WHEN I GET IT BACK THE BIG SCREEN IS NOT WORKING ANYMORE ,CANT C THE MANU CAN'T C THE PICTURES. WHAT SHOULD I DO ?
My D90 with 18-200 lens would sometimes not release the shutter. It would display an "r13" message, but nothing would happen when I pressed the shutter release. The local Nikon service center advised me to swab the electrical contacts on the lens and on the body with a cotton swab soaked in alcohol. I did that and the problem was solved immediately, The technician said it is a common problem here (Vietnam) because of the high humidity levels.

will help us. I removed the lens few times, and FOR NOW everything is OK. If i get Err13 one more time i will contact with the shop where i bought my D90. It's shame for this expensive camera to have these technical flaws.
I have the same problem. Took it back to the store. the dude behind the counter thought is was funny to make 90 pictures in front of me of the counter and could not find the error. We sent it to Nikon, couldn't find the error. Guy said he did not want to replace it unless we could reproduce the error. I am stuck with a beautiful worthless camera that cannot work. But reading these lines I guess it is more common that I would have thought. If I could return it I would, they are not willing to coorporate

I have a similar problem with a D90 (with 18-200mm lens). Sometimes when I turn it on and try to take a photo the autofocus won't operate and depressing the shutter release fully does nothing.
Turning it on and off, and playing around with the aperture and focus seems to sort it out eventually.

I get an ERR code constantly that only resolves if the battery is removed briefly.
Ditto on that problem! Seems to be happening more frequently. I remove the battery and the problem temporarily is gone. I did notice though that when I adjust the lens (standard 18 - 105mm) the problem goes away.
Err message means the unit needs to go back to Nikon. On my two month old D90, I'd been experiencing the F-- message, and then the shutter closed and would not release. After removing lens, powering on/off... the dance of desperation eventually seemed to work. However, it happened several times and nothing was repeatable to solve the problem or recreate it. Nikon Service was real clear: if Err shows, it needs service. Nikon has 24-7 support, give them a call. So far as the auto focus is concerned, my only trouble has been when it want to focus on something too close. Even a spot on a window I'm shooting through can get it confused. This occurs when it's set to auto. I've not used it enough to know how the other setting might resolve this.

I have the same problem with my D90. Usually, I have to unlock the lens, twist it off just a bit. Then relock the lens to the camera. Sometimes I can just twist the zoom and the lens will 'reseat' itself. Then, last night, I attached the 600 flash unit and got 'Err' displayed and the camera would not turn off. I had to take the battery out and put it back in. The camera must use Windows software ?!?!
I have the same problem with my D90. I was using a 16 G memory card. I keep getting the ERR erros and the camera froze. the only way to free it was to remove the battery. I took it back to Costco and got my money back. It started freezing on the 3rd day of use. after two months, it continue to freeze more and more frequent.
Very often same things happen. It does not want to shoot. Removal of battery helps, but this is not acceptable so I am contacting Nikon...
