It's more likely you hooked the battery up backwards. That reverses the polarity and will make the starter spin backwards.

With engine off, check continuity through the stator winding. you should have continuity both ways if testing before the diode. If testing after the diode, and you still have continuity both ways, then your diode is blown and needs to be replaced. If you don't have continuity through the stator windings, then stator is defective.
Some models have a fuse in the charging circuit, look for that as well and test with a meter, don't assume visually.
