I bought a refurbished laptop it came formatted and reloaded with a new operating system, it has two product keys underneath, one is the original and the second is the refurbished product key. When I boot up the laptop the system automatically takes me thru setup stages that eventually lead to a product key prompt, neither keys work. What can I do to get past this screen? Why is it not accepting the refurb key? Thanks

Provided the laptop booted (albeit to requiring bios set up), all is well. The data such as time needs to be re-entered manually, because since the battery is required to maintain volatile memory, when the battery goes flat or is removed, the data is lost. Re-enter all data, including boot sequence (i.e. IDE 0, CD-ROM/DVD)! exit saving to CMOS. should reboot to OS.

The problem is that you need to boot up the laptop with the CD as the first boot device so you can then install Windows XP.
If you press F12 a boot up you will get a list of alternate boot devices oher than the hard disk as the first boot device, which was set up in the BIOS. Select the CD as the first boot device and when prompted press the space bar to start the CD.

Hi there.
If you have just bought the laptop chances are the operating has been removed to you cannot see any data that used to be on it, you need to go and purchase a windows OS that the laptop was built for (i'm guessing XP) and re-install the operating system again.
Good luck and thanks for using FixYa!!

When you download the T40 device drivers, they need to be the XP versions.
When you run the driver programs they will be unzipped/expanded to the hard drive in a folder c:\drivers. Then you need to open the various folders and run the setup programs to install the various drivers.
NOTE - The T40 series laptops come with various different manufacturers devices (eg. there are a few different wireless model LANs) and if one version driver doesn't work you need to install a different one. It is a bit of trial and error to find the right one.
