I have found a simple permanent solution to this problem. The problem seems to be to do with the camera detecting when the mini usb plug is inserted. When you put the plug in the screen comes back to life. Therefore insert a small piece of twisted wire into the socket such as a paper clip cut to a small length so you can leave it there and close the lid. I was ready to throw this camera away but this fixed it.

My LCD was black but everything else worked fine. I snacked it against the palm of my hand as recommended and it worked immediately. Wish I had know when I was travelling.

I have this Nikon AW100 camera for over a year now, and since recently I also have this problem. I really love this camera but now only the video function works and for all the rest the screen doesn`t go on. It does take photos but the screen is off, nothing worked to fix the camera for me.
I hit the camera a few times, just like you people said here, with the front of the camera on my leg, palm of the hand, etc and nothing happened. (and I hit it really hard as it can survive a drop off 2 meters)
Then I hooked the camera up with a usb cable to a pc and unhooked it again and for a moment the `Coolpix`logo came up and in photo-modus the screen turned on but 3 seconds later turned off again.
Too bad, so now I`m returning this camera to the shop and send It to Nikon and I hope this is guarantee! Jimi, Belgium

With the power off, hold the camera in your palm and smack the front of the camera on your leg or arm. You might have to smack it a few time to get it to work. It has to do with the camera CDD lense (shuttle) being stuck. By smacking it around, it will free up the lense. Being extra gentle with it though. It worked for me. Hope this help.

SOURCE: nikon coolpix S6 screen black

All you have to do is lay your camera with the LCD side down, make sure its on a soft surface like a carpet or a pillow. Once you have it laying down, put a peice or two of newspaper, or any paper, on top of the camera. and then hit it a few times with something. like a brush or anything hard like that. it worked for me. :) good luck.

This happened to me too!
Turn the dial to setup, push the menu button & select reset all. This will restore the defaults & let you use the flash again.

I have nikon coolpix s210. when i turn on the camera, the view finder screen is black, i cannot take pictures as they come out black. though the flash and other functions work well. i can also see photos...

This problem (the screen with no picture) can be caused by a number of problems). One is that a connection with in the camera has disconnected. Another is the possibility of the LCD being bad or broken (some of these LCDs are hard to detect broken screens). Another problem could be with in the circuits has stopped working. Another could be that there is a problem with the CCD sensor. If any menus can be shown, then the problem is within the lens or sensor or something related. If you can see nothing on the screen, no matter what you pick, then the problems are harder to detect as to what is wrong.

Bad CCD, this is like film in a film camera. If the CCD becomes faulty it can no longer record images. This as a rule unless you can repair yourself is a repair not worth doing.
