When I shutdown my computer the OS (XP) appears to shutdown properly, but the computer then hangs on a black screen and I have to hold the power button down for 6 seconds to shut it off. I know this is not a virus as I ran scans with many different programs and when that didn't work I formatted and re-installed the OS. The computer restarts fine on its own this only happens on shutdown. I have looked over the bios thoroughly and have not found a setting to force shutdown on error. Any suggestions would be appreciated. If I'm not mistaking the bios is A17. Thank you.

In my case with an Aspire 4710 it was the old or incorrect chipset drivers from the Acer site.
After downloading the proper new drivers from Intel all is fine.

Try running chkdsk /r and then restart the computer. to do that, click on START, RUN, in the open field, type 'cmd' and press <enter>. A dos window will open. At the blinking cursor, type 'chkdsk /r' and press <enter>. You will get a message that the drive can't be locked and do you want to run it the next time Windows starts. Type 'y' and press <enter>. Now shutdown the computerand restart it. Chkdsk will run and it may take some time. Depending on your installation, you will see a blue screen that will show the progress. Sometimes the screen will stay black and the hard drive light will flash. That's ok. Let it run until Windows loads. Wait until it is completely loaded and then try shutting it down normally.
Good luck and let me know how it works out.

If you try to run XP setup without changing the BIOS SATA setting to
ATA mode, setup will BSOD with an 0X0000007B error. Make sure the SATA
setting in the BIOS is ATA...
you will get this error when you will be booting your system from CD and windows installation will be in first step.
to resolve it, go to BIOS setting-->change BIOS SATA setting to ATA mode--->apply changes-->insert windows CD and restart the system-->press f12--->nd boot from CD....hope u will be able to resolve it.
