Dell e1505 won't power off

When I shutdown my computer the OS (XP) appears to shutdown properly, but the computer then hangs on a black screen and I have to hold the power button down for 6 seconds to shut it off. I know this is not a virus as I ran scans with many different programs and when that didn't work I formatted and re-installed the OS. The computer restarts fine on its own this only happens on shutdown. I have looked over the bios thoroughly and have not found a setting to force shutdown on error. Any suggestions would be appreciated. If I'm not mistaking the bios is A17. Thank you.

SOURCE: Hangs up on the standby, hibernate, and shutdown screens

In my case with an Aspire 4710 it was the old or incorrect chipset drivers from the Acer site.
After downloading the proper new drivers from Intel all is fine.

SOURCE: My XPS 1530 will not shutdown, it only restarts

Try running chkdsk /r and then restart the computer. to do that, click on START, RUN, in the open field, type 'cmd' and press <enter>. A dos window will open. At the blinking cursor, type 'chkdsk /r' and press <enter>. You will get a message that the drive can't be locked and do you want to run it the next time Windows starts. Type 'y' and press <enter>. Now shutdown the computerand restart it. Chkdsk will run and it may take some time. Depending on your installation, you will see a blue screen that will show the progress. Sometimes the screen will stay black and the hard drive light will flash. That's ok. Let it run until Windows loads. Wait until it is completely loaded and then try shutting it down normally.

Good luck and let me know how it works out.

Windows XP won't load - black screen

Refresh all the connection on your motherboard like ATX power supply, HDD and CD/DVD ROM cables, and specially the RAM. You may have to clean the RAM as shown in the image below. c4d62f6.jpg
then hopefully your computer will return to normal. Hope this helps.

Inspiron e1505

Hi,
You should be able to restore the system from the recovery partition on that model laptop.
Shut down the system. Then start it up. Right after pushing the power button to start it, hold down the CTRL and keep tapping the F11 key(for XP). If you have Vista just tap on F8(no need to hold down CTRL). A symantec recovery application (PC Restore) window will start up. just follow the instructions on the window.

Regards.

Update BIOS E1505/6400 fails

The link below will take you to Dell's support download site for the e1505 BIOS download.

http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/download.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen&releaseid=R158849&SystemID=INSPIRONI6400/E1505&servicetag=&os=WW1&osl=en&deviceid=10430&devlib=0&typecnt=0&vercnt=9&catid=-1&impid=-1&formatcnt=1&libid=1&fileid=212350

It is version A17. Download the file to your desktop and then double click on it to run it. A window will ask if you wish to upgrade the BIOS. Click yes. The system will shutdown, the BIOS will be flashed and Windows will restart.

The error that you mention above indicates that the file did not download properly for you before.

Good luck, and please let me know how this works out for you.
