I bet the problem is that you used to have two phone lines and now you only have one line. You cannot program an extension into one of these phones unless both Line1 and Line2 coming into the phone are working- it will act as if the extension you picked is in use, but the actual thing it is complaining about is that Line2 isn't working. The phones might have been working for years on a single phone line as long as they didn't lose power. But you don't have to throw the phones away just because you gave up your second phone line, you can still make them work. (I did it for a 12 phone system.) The way to to it: make a special cable that connects your single incoming phone line to both L1 and L2 on the phone, tricking the phone into thinking both L1 and L2 are working. Then program the extensions into the phones, and go back to using a normal cable so that only Line1 is hooked up. To make this cable: take a normal male to male cable and cut off one end. Then connect both the black and the green wires of the cut end of your cable to the green post in a standard phone jack (the kind you would surface mount on the wall will work best), and connect both the yellow and red wires to the red post inside the surface mount phone jack. Now you have an "extension cable" that takes your one incoming line to both L1 and L2 on the phone: Now plug your incoming phone wire into the phone jack, and plug the wire you connected into the jack into the back of your phone. The phone is probably already blinking red on the intercom, just push the extension number you want it to have, making sure there are no conflicting extensions already in use.
I would reconnect the phone using a normal line so that only Line 1 is "hot", don't leave it on this double-connected cable any longer than you need to in order to program the extension.
Good luck!

Just cleaning my office and was about to throw my GE 2-9450 out as I never could find the fix...but before I destroyed it I checked one last time and there the fix was! Made a jumper for the outside 2 wires on the 4 wire jack to make lines 1 & 2 hot and now it works. After about 2 years on the floor unplugged~. Thanks Thalion1 - I am sure a lot of phones were thown out before your post!!!

You may need to assign an intercom ID for that unit by pushing one of the intercom buttons at the top.

My Intercom light started blinking red and green for some unknown reason. I tried all the suggestions, reset the phone & lost 32 presets with no luck. I finally took a small piece of black electric tape and stuck it over the blinking light. If the light is blinking and nobody can see it, is it really blinking?

We have a 4-line system in our office, but it is not working properly. For instant, when line 4 rings...it only comes into one of the phones. All lines are working properly with dial tones. If we would...

Now here's a conflict. Does line 4 work on any other phone where it doesn't ring? You say all lines are working properly wiith dial tones, tnen you say you can't pick it up from another phone.

I don't think these phones have "private lines", but the dial tone comes from the 2nd RJ-14 jack on the wall. On every phone, you could swap the plugs so that line 1 comes into line 3 and line 3 comes into line 1 (you'll lose the intercom) and see if you get dial tone on line 2 which will be the phone that works line 4. The point being to determine if you have a wiring issue or a programming problem.

What happens when you dial "9" into the intercom dial tone? Is that the line you wnat to auto select?

A lot depends on the system your phone is connected with. In a TA series on an idle phone, press PROGRAM 11 for no preference (what you have) 12 for Idle line (what you get when you dial 9) or 13 and a number from 1 to however many lines you have to select a specific line.
Those commands are followed by the STORE button and PROGRAM to end the programming.

I have the AT&T Model 854 4-line phone. When the phone is plugged in the phone starts toning and won't stop.

Thats because its looking for the intercom number to be assigned. as soon as you assign one in programming it will stop.

My intercom button flashed red to green. When I push a line button, I get a two-tone beep but no dial tone. I changed the internal 9 v battery. I unplugged the phone and waited, then plugged it back in....

Each telephone must be connected to line 1 and line 2 for
proper operation. The remaining lines 3 and 4 may — or may not —
be connected to each station as you desire. First plug in the battery, then the phone lines (1 & 2 are mandatory), and third the power cord. If your intercome LED is blinking red and green, then press: STORE IN, followed by "INTERCOM" followed by a free intercom# (i.e., any of the memory buttons 1 through 16 not already assigned to another telephone set). Then wait for the phone to go through its initiation sequence during which it searches each of the four possible lines. After that concludes, you should get dial tone on your active lines. :-) Marco

There was a power surge, and now my phone is stuck on pulse dialing, how do I get it back to tone? I can use the star key to bypass the pulse and put the phone on tone, but it only works one call at a...

You’ll need either a 6-button or a 24-button set SPIRIT CS administration.

First the control unit ADMIN switch must be ON, the administration overlay must be in place on station 10, and the set must be plugged into control unit jack 10 (call processing is interrupted only at station 10).

After moving the admin switch, and before dialing Ftr 7 -
From station 10 press intercom,
Press speaker,
Dial *0,
Dial 1,
Then Press Ftr 7.

Each line indicator light will show the current dialing type for that line. If the light is OFF, that line is set for touch tone dialing. If the light is ON, the line is set for dial pulse
dialing.

To change the dialing type for a line or lines, press the line button(s) and dial the
appropriate digit from the table below. You may press more than one line button to make the change on more than one line. If you enter a digit without first pressing a line button you will hear the error tone.

Be sure to turn the admin switch back off when you’re finished.
