1: battery neg lug off, or boom eat acid
2; wires off starter solenoid,
3: unbolt it. it falls out, DUCK!

you need to know how to put it back

some cars have shield there and need to be removed.

We do not have wiring diagrams here at fixya, the manuals are copyrighted material I did find this one picture with numbered wires that may help you hook things up.

there is a purple wire that attaches to the starter. That goes to the starter solenoid.

Replace the starter,it is in the solenoid,you can just can replace the solenoid.

facing the front of the starter, the terminal closest to the engine is the trigger wire for the solenoid. any other small wires would generally be attached to the other small terminal if yours has one. (trigger wire is the only small one that will have full 12v with key turned to start position)

4 wheel drive hardware @ 4wd.com

You will have to jack up the engine.
I don't think you have to remove the starter
