Scanning trouble on office jet 6500

I've tried scanning from both the printer and on my mac but I can not click the scan icon and a message reading , 'Failed to open a session on the device' appears. I've scanned images onto my mac before using the officejet scanner but it's not working now. What should I do?

SOURCE: The scanner dont work in my HP officejet 5610 all in one

This is a known issue with HP printers. Do not worry, if you get this message that the scanning software could not be found the please go to the link
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareCategory?product=441125&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&submit.y=0&submit.x=0&lang=en&cc=us

Select the Operating System.
From the list select. ... HP Full Feature Software and Drivers

Then scroll down to the 3rd option......
Click on Download only >> Save the file to the desktop.
Start installation and make sure that the Printer is not connected using the USB cable to the computer.

While installing, you will get the option to connect the printer. Do not connect the printer.
Select the option "I will connect it later". Go next the installation will be complete.

After the installation is complete...leave the CD inside the computer.

Connect the computer and the printer.
It will show you the configuration window.
Wait until you see the "Start using the device" option.
Click on "Start using the device".
You should see the solution center window now.

If it is succesfull. Try scanning using the Solution center.
If it is succesfull, you can now scan using the printer as well.

Try it and let me know if it works and please let me know your issue in detail.

SOURCE: HP OFFICEJET 5610V No scan options

If you get the error while trying to scan with your HP 5610v All-In-One, the easy way to scan from your printer is to click on start, go to Paint and then File, the option "From Scanner or Camera" will come up.. click there and poof - you can scan anything you want and save it where you want... Problem solved!! good luck!!!

SOURCE: Scanner error in HP officejet Pro L7590

These instructions will fix the majority of scanner problems and networking problems using ethernet:

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c01849855&lc=en&dlc=ro&cc=ro&product=3643612&rule=4124&lang=ro

The key is to assign a static ip address for the printer. The install problems of trying to get the HP printer to be found will go away. You can then use the scanner. Also...it is crucial that when connecting other laptop's and PC's on the same network that you use the hp printer'rs host name to find the printer on the network. I find that the IP address can and usually fails to find the hp on the network. Mostly likely you cannot search the network for a hp printer until you go the route of find the hp network printer with the host name of the printer. You will also need your install disk when installing on other networl laptop's and PC's since windows xp and Vista machines don't have the drivers in the list. You will need to point the add printer gui driver to the disk and look for autorun.inf
file. After selecting that file...you can then see your drivers.

Hi,
Shortly after the world started upgrading to Snow Leopard, reports began emerging that many Hewlett-Packard printers were incompatible with the upgrade. So, you can wait till you get the updated driver which is compatible with Mac Snow leopard.
Good Luck!

I have a Mac w/Snow Leopard. I cannot get to hp.com\support to download drivers for an Office Jet 7780. The Mac recognizes it as a printer but not as a scanner.

As from this link , the drivers for most HP printers are already built-in to Snow Leopard. Thus, they didn't recommend reinstalling driver from your HP printer CD. Here are some excerpts regarding scanning feature on Snow Leopard from the link: Scanning: The Scanning interface is now built into Snow Leopard and supported with the Apple Image Capture application. Instructions follow. NOTE: HP Scan Pro software (from Mac OS X 10.4, 10.5) is not supported in Snow Leopard. The HP icon for HP Device Manager still in the dock after upgrade is not functional and should be removed. NOTE: Scan support from pushing the Scan button on the printer is not supported with this version of the scan interface built into Snow Leopard. Scan functionality is supported by scanning directly from the computer.
** there are methods on how you can scan on Snow Leopard from the link that I've given above. But I'll paste here Method 3:

Method three: Scan from Print & Fax > Printer browser
  1. From the Apple menu, choose System Preferences .
  2. Click Print & Fax .
  3. In the list of printers on the left side of the dialog, select the HP All-in-One to view the options in the Print & Fax window.
  4. Click the Scan tab, and then click Open Scanner . The Printer Browser window appears.
  5. Click the Scan icon at top right of the toolbar to launch scanning. The scan interface opens. Click Show Details to view settings and options.
Important Gotcha: If the Scan or Print icons do not appear in the Printer Browser window toolbar, you need to delete the current HP printer queue and add a new one, as follows:
  1. Close the Printer Browser window to return to the Print & Fax preference pane. Or, go directly to the System Preferences > Print & Fax pane.
  2. Select your HP printer in the list on the left.
  3. Click the - sign at the bottom of the list to delete the product from the list.
  4. Click the + sign at the bottom of the list to add the product back to the list.
  5. Select your HP printer, and then click Add to create a new print queue. The next time you open thePrinter Browser window, the Print and Scan icons should appear in the toolbar, providing access to Image Capture.

Trouble with Scanner

Hi Elizabeth,
Different post, same message :)
This is a common complaint.. Are you running Vista, by any chance? The all in one solution software you used in XP doesn't work fully with Vista.

But you can still scan and copy by using Windows Photo Gallery.

1. Click on files tab at the top in Window Photo Gallery.
2. Click on import from camera or scanner.
3. Highlight your scanner icon (ie HP Pro L7650) then click import.
4. New scan window will popup, now you can preview or scan using this basic looking Vista utility.

Hope that helps.
