Hi my hp 640 will not answer a fax call, but will answer only if we pick up the hand set.

Issue When the all-in-one product is sharing a phone line with voice calls, some calls are interrupted by fax tones. Follow the steps below to solve the problem.Step one: Check the Rings to Answer setting If Auto Answer is enabled, the HP fax product will answer the phone line when the number of rings reaches the number of rings specified in the Rings-to-Answer setting. When voice calls will be received on the same phone line as faxes, set to rings-to-answer to 6. If you do not want the fax to answer automatically, either turn off Auto Answer from the front panel and receive faxes manually (this may result in lost faxes) or subscribe to a distinctive ring service from the phone company (if available). Refer to the Answering faxes manually section below to learn how to answer faxes manually or refer to the Using distinctive ringing section below for more information about using distinctive ringing. The Rings-to-answer setting for the HP Officejet 500 and 600 series products can only be checked or set using the all-in-one software on the computer. Our HP 2140 fax under distinctive ring setting DRPD was answering under our Master ring (double Ring) until yesterday it switched inside somehow where it now answers regular phone ring instead of...

Was the fax plugged into another telephone line? Maybe a power surge?

My solution would be to reconfigure the fax from scratch to learn the ring pattern.

From the Manual:

Step 1-Teach the HP Fax the ring pattern

The HP Fax will learn the ring pattern when you call it from another telephone or fax
machine.

1. Be ready to call the fax machine.
2. Press Menu repeatedly until BASIC FAX displays and press OK.
3. Use LEFT ARROW - RIGHT ARROW BUTTONS to scroll through the options until DRPD Mode displays and press OK.
Call this fax from another fax machine... Waiting Ring...
will display.
4. Call the HP Fax.

DRPD OK will display when the pattern has been learned and the HP Fax will return
to Ready mode.

Step 2-Set up distinctive ring (DRPD) answer mode

Once you have activated distinctive ring, it becomes one of the answering modes you
can select by pressing the Mode/Contrast button.

Press Mode/Contrast repeatedly until DRPD Mode appears in the display.

• In Ready mode, DRPD appears in the right hand corner of the display.
• Now, the HP Fax will manage calls and faxes as if it were set to AUTO mode
(AUTO mode on page 28)

TIP: Distinctive ring must be set up again if you reassign your fax number
or connect the machine to another telephone line. Once set up again (that
is, the fax machine has learned the ring pattern and the answering mode is
correctly set), you should test the fax machine by calling the fax number
and another number on the same line. The machine should respond
appropriately to a call placed to the fax number with fax tones, and to a
normal telephone call with the expected ring pattern.

I can send but not receive on my HP fax 1010. Both send and receive modes had been working just fine until this past weekend. I suspect I might have accidently bumped a button on the front...

Hi,

Since you have verified from the manual and see no issues with the settings I doubt that you have done some thing wron with the settings. Even though just check whether you plugging the phone line into the line jack or the phone jack on the fax machine, it should plug in to line. Also try and unplug/replug the units power cord as well as trying a different phone jack location. If tghis does not work try to capture the error that you get as this would help in entering in the troubleshooting link provided bellow:

How do I set up the fax feature?

Introduction The HP All-in-One can receive faxes automatically or manually depending on the Auto Answer setting. If the Auto Answer option is set to On (the default setting), the HP All-in-One will automatically answer incoming calls and receive faxes after the number of rings specified by the Rings to Answer setting. (The default Rings to Answer setting is five rings). Refer to the given instructions to receive faxes automatically or manually. Receiving faxes The HP All-in-One can receive faxes automatically or manually. Receiving a fax automatically To receive faxes automatically, set the Auto Answer option to On (the default setting). The HP All-in-One will automatically answer incoming calls and receive faxes after the number of rings specified by the Rings to Answer setting. (The default Rings to Answer setting is five rings). Receiving a fax manually If the HP All-in-One has been set up to receive faxes manually (the Auto Answer option is set to Off ), or you answer the phone and hear fax tones, use these instructions to receive faxes.
  1. Make sure the HP All-in-One is turned on and you have paper loaded in the input tray.
  2. Remove any originals from the document feeder tray.
  3. Set the Rings to Answer setting to a high number to allow you to answer the incoming call before the HP All-in-One answers. Or, turn off the Auto Answer setting so that the HP All-in-One does not automatically answer incoming calls.
  4. If you are currently on the phone with the sender, instruct the sender to press Start on their fax machine.
  5. When you hear fax tones from a sending fax machine, do the following:
    1. Press Start Fax Black or Start Fax Color on the control panel of the HP All-in- One.
    2. When prompted, press the down arrow to highlight Receive Fax Manually , and then press OK .
  6. Press Start Fax Black again.
  7. After the HP All-in-One begins to receive the fax, you can hang up the phone or remain on the line. The phone line is silent during fax transmission.

My hp 3055 has not been receiving any faxes

The only thing that I can think of for you to do is to completly delete it from your computer & then re-download it. Only do this if you get no other resolution. Or you can call 1-800-474-7739 for hp technical support. I just did & they were a great help to me!
