The DVD drives must match the motherboard that it came with. Unless you go through a very complicated re-flashing process. If the motherboard and DVD drive do not match, it will not play 360 games

SOURCE: Bought a Replacement Samsung TS-H943 DVD-ROM Drive for Xbox 360

Hello. The pcb board is "married" to the motherboard with a certain firmware. If you didn't flash the new drive with the correct firmware it will not work. The best thing to do is just replace the laser if you have DVD drive problems. I hope you still have the old one! Good luck to you. Thanks!

Xbox 360 DVD Drive Not Reading Games Only DVD,CD after replacing the dvd rom

If you replaced the DVD-ROM drive yourself, some newer Xboxes do not recognize and/or function properly with older drives. I tried replacing a drive in an older Xbox with an older yet DVD-ROM drive, and it would not work. When replacing a DVD-ROM in an Xbox, it is advisable to use the same model drive, as the Xbox does strange things when you introduce different hardware. The url of a page is below that details the different drives that Xboxes use. See if your new drive is the same as the old one, and if not, that is almost certainly the issue.

Xbox 360 will not read any game disc

Have you tried a known good disc? have you tried one of these discs in another 360? if you have and they work, but they dont work in yours, it sounds like the CD ROM drive is defective.
If you have the knowhow, you can buy and install a replacement drive for under about 40 dollars. Here is a link I found on amazon complete with reviews

How to install the dvd-rom drive model ts-h943

In response to the November 2006 update error that "bricked" his console, Mr. Kevin Ray of California has filed a class action lawsuit against Microsoft in Washington federal court in early December of 2006.[64] The lawsuit seeks $5 million in damages and the free repair of any console rendered unusable by the update. This will be the second such lawsuit filed against Microsoft, the first having been filed in December of 2005, shortly after the 360's launch.
Following Microsoft's announcement in December 2006 that it would extend the Xbox 360 warranty to a full year, from the previous 90 days, Ray's attorney confirmed to the Seattle Post Intelligencer that the lawsuit had been resolved under confidential terms.[65]

Dosent recognize games

you can take it apart (and void the waranty) and resolder the connection between the drive and the Xbox reader or just send it in to microsoft.... if you still have the waranty (which you probably do) then they will fix it for free

Xbox 360 says to play disc put it in an xbox 360 console

The box isn't loading the decoder softwarer for the Disc. The Xbox discs are encoded HD DVD-ROM discs, and the box needs to recognize them so it can load the decoder software. It probably says "play dvd" on the xbox dashboard right?
