There is an IC inside the set that is suppose to control the volume and maintain the level it is set to and not let it get to high on commercials or to low in love scenes.this IC has gone bad, common problem in Emerson. IC isn't very expensive, although sometimes it's in with other things on a 64 pin IC. Little tiring desoldering and soldering it back in.

Yes, I do realize this is three years later but i just bought a brand new 50" emerson a month ago and it started doing the thing where it turns the volume all the way down by itself, after hours of reading useless posts and getting nowhere the little light bulb in my head clicked and i went to the sound settings in the menu and turned off virual surround sound and it stopped the problem with the volume freaking out and doing its own thing

Take the batteries out of your remote . Unplug tv after properly turning it off. Press source twice (while leaving remote batteries out) Plug tv back up. Turn tv on . It should fix the problem .

SOURCE: volume keeps going up by itself
I have the same problem. My Curtis Mathes TV volume keeps going up. I could go to the TV and manually turn the volume down but then it would go back up UNTIL we took the batteries out of the remote. After a while we will put them back in, until it happens again. But that will work for a few weeks.

I wouldn't advise changing the eeprom... you will need to fully adjust the TV after doing so. Not a good idea. A simple solution my be found by examining your TV control buttons. Inspect the travel and tactile feel of the volume buttons on the TV (not remote). You may have a button that is depressed and causing the problem. Another common problem occurs when the owner cleans the face of the TV with solvents (Windex) by directly spraying the surface. Solvent leaks between the frame and the CRT and ends up corroding the control button. If this is the case, you will need to replace or remove the faulty button. If you have a remote, elimination of the button is the simplest solution.
SOURCE: TV Volume goes up by itself and remote wont work
Hi,
There are 2 reasons that this is happening in respect to the problem commencing after your daughter has cleaned the tv. Either your daughter has sprayed the volume button with cleaner and fluid has got into the the graphite pad under the button and conducting as though the button is being pressed continuously..or she has put too much pressure on the button if it is a metallic plate contact switch. One way to find out is by pressing the down volume button.does it it click ? if it does.try the up volume..If that doesnt click the problem is the metallic plate is dented in making contact hence a new switch. Another cause ive seen is cleaning the remote control with cleaner and fluid has got into the remote and it sends signals to the tv all the time..If the remote control is hidden under a cushion and the problem stops, then the remote control is at fault and needs drying out..Hope this helps :)
SOURCE: tv volume turns down by itself
I had that happen to me once and found that one of my remotes was under the sofa cushion, However, I would look at the connections on the pcd that has the volume controls on them, the down switch either has moisture or corrosion behind it, or the switch itself is faulty, if not, remove all dust from inside the set, some may be causing conductivity on the processor, I believe it will be a mechanical type fault rather than electronic...try that...Phil

This sounds like something best handled by an experienced tech since the fix involves extreemly high voltages nearby,
If you have a very good knowledge of the inner workings of tv's then ask for more information.
