Oil type for generator

  • wolflore2000 Dec 20, 2008

What do you consider "very cold" as a tempature. I have a Coleman Powermate 5500. Would the 5W30 work in temps around 20 degrees?

Unless you're in very cold locations use SAE 5W30 regular motor oil.

Honda 5000 generator with remote starter running rough.. tis like ******* or something.. oil was almost empty so i stopped generator and added oil and restarted.. can u give some advice as to how to remedy...

Those generators are set up with a low oil saftey but your gonna want to check compression anyways just to verify it is where it needs to be. Im gonna guess its to be between 120-160 psi, check your manual for the service limits. after that check your air filter, valve lash, fuel filter etc etc.

Where do you buy the gas shut off valve for the 5000 power mate coleman generator with a 5 gal plastic tank.

Take the old valve, called a petcock, to a local lawn mower repair shop and they should be able to help you.

Oil change

There are two 14mm bolts on both sides (lower) of the motor. Unscrew one or both and drain the oil....Replace with sae 30 or 10w30 oil and should take almost a quart. (Put the bolts back in and tork slightly.) Check oil level.

What type of oil for a Coleman 5000 Generator?

You need a quart of regular old SAE 5W30 motor oil with detergent.
The engines on these generators are more or less the same as a lawn mower.
Don't forget to service/change the air cleaner when you change the oil, that should keep your generator producing full power.

Regards,
Carl
