Connecting a DVD player with Component Video, and Coax Digital Audio to tx-sr705. Playing a 5.1 DVD with 5.1 speaker configuration. Video is fine. Audio is not. Center speaker has no sound. Dialog track of video only present when setting on "stereo", "all channel stereo", and "mono movie". Dialog track is missing when setting on "Dolbe D", "THx", and several other modes that generate 5.1 sound. It appears that all the music, ambient & background sounds and effects are present when setting at modes for 5.1.
Unfortunately without "surround" processing, the center speaker will not work at all. It sounds like there is a problem with the center channel amp which is part of the receiver. This should be a single amp IC attached to the heatsink. There should be a "test" moe that will send white noise to each speaker in sequence. Try that. If that results in no sound to the center, it pretty much concludes that the center amp needs to be repaired. The part cost for this should be around $25.

Please check first the "TEST TONE" if in test mode the speaker not work then there must be a problem which tends to some thing malfunctioning.

Hi, please dont rate me if this could not fix your problem. There is to possible ways that causes your problem:1st is a wiring connections. Check well your wire if properly installed.If you have multitester then please check the continuity of your wire. 2nd maybe will be on the settings. Check the wire of your audio input/output then press the settings where you set up it.Thank you...

most likely the problem occurs when :
options and parameters r not "setting up" well.
also u shud realize that some movies doesnt support even the 5.1.
anyway just make sure of the settings.
Can i just clarify something? what are you connecting the DVD player up to? a TV or a PC?
LOL, if your trying to listen to the audio via the PC then i had the same problem!!! what your computer needs are the latest codecs!!! get XP codec pack here (it works just as good with vista):

Hey, i had similar problems myslef way back when with the exact same issue and im trying to remember the cause.
First, it is most likely with the setting with the AMP or whatever your using to split the channels for surround sound. Judging that the DVD is set to 5.1 surround sound, thenim guessing its the AMP. usually there is a configuration setting that lets you change from DIGITAl to ANOLOGUE, Stero to Mono or Surround through DOlby digital.
How is the VDVD player connected to the speakers. an AMP, or one of theos suround sound speaker Kits that just plug on little jack into it and instant sound comes form it and the Subwoofer acts as the central point for the other speakers?
Let me know so i can narrow down the posibilities. While i wait for you, i will go mess with mine and try and remember the exact cause.
If the the center speaker never works, then there is a fault.
If by "the center speaker" you mean a central small speaker in a 5.1, than the speaker is faulty or the cable is badly connected. More likely a bad wiring.
If by center speaker you mean the bass unit (central woofer) then there again that is probably a fault. Once again this unit is sopposed to produce sound even in mono, or two speakers stereo.
When you switch to 5.1 mode, you use all the speakers the same as in mono, or 2.1 stereo mode, only the sound is distributed in a different way.
Usually, when one of the speakers never work, that means that there is a problem with wiring, or with audio system and speakers.
The chance that this is a faulty DVD output is quite remote.
Test the audio system by connecting to a different device. If all speakers work, check wirings, if wirings are ok, then you can say that the DVD has a fault.

Have you tried playing "barefoot", no Dolby processing. If output (sound) is still missing from one or a number of speakers, then it is hardware, most likely one or more of the amplifiers. On the otherhand, if the sound is present, then it would be the Dolby processor board.

One down, amplifier for center speaker of the Onkyo TX-SR705 is defective.
2nd issue, Dialog track is missing when setting on "Dolb D", "THx", and several other modes that generate 5.1 sound. Again the Center Speaker. Pls see p.20 of the manual:"This speaker enhances the front left and right speakers, making sound movements distinct and providing a full sound image. In movies it’s used mainly for dialog."

Speaker cables and connectors might have been jammed, make sure they are connected to designated ports. Make sure the type of cable supported or you can try to use a high end type of cable for the video and sound.
Swap the audio jacks and then try.

Solution #1 is not the answer. All speaker cables are connected correctly. In "all channel stereo" mode, all speakers (except the center speaker) are active with full audio.
The problem is within the AV itself.
Any other possibilities?
The two solutions that have been posted to this problem are not responsive. Speaker cables are secure, the configuration is correct, the firmware is current (according to the AVS postings).
Is there any input about hardware malfunction that could cause the described results?
To clarify (possibly):
The "central" speaker is the central small speaker in 5.1, not a bass speaker. The speaker works fine in another set-up, but is silent in the SR705 set-up. This makes me think that the receiver is malfunctioning.
The "front" and "surround" speakers are configured correctly in the SR705 set-up. The audio is correct when the listening mode in the 705 is set for "stereo" or "all channel stereo". But when the listening mode is set for any of the 5.1 options, the dialog channel of the 5.1 coding is missing. Only the ambient sound and sound effects are present. The sound effects (eg. a passing auto) move from speaker to speaker correctly. This is true for both Dolby and DTS coding in the DVD.
This is my first experience that shows the sound in 5.1 coding to be seperated into components. But I am sure that there are many other things I don't know.
The speakers are connected to the (amplified) output of the Onkyo TX-SR705 AVR. And the manual "speaker configuration" setting is correct for the speakers.
The AVR is connected to a PC monitor with an HDMI cable. The "HDMI audio" setting is "OFF" (part of the TX-SR705 setup).
The AVR is not connected to a PC. Is connected via HDMI to a video monitor.
No change with "HDMI audio: ON".
Any other ideas?
I have manually setup the speaker configuration--several times.
I have used several source DVDs, each with Dolby 5.1 coding, and one with DTS coding. All with the same result.
The setup is built around an Onkyo TX-SR705 receiver. Sony DVR connected to the AVR with component video and digital coax cable. LCD monitor connected via an HDMI cable with audio "off". Polk Monitor speakers connected with Belden speaker wire, connections checked and rechecked--5.1 configuration.
Other sources connected to the AVR include phono & cd, both work fine in 2.1 stereo.
I mis-wrote in the last comment. The source is a Sony DVD, not a DVR.

I have played the DVD "barefoot", and the center speaker remains dead. Your suggestion re. the center speaker is apparently correct. How can I accept your speaker solution and continue with the lost dialog problem without repeating all the discussion to date? Obviously I have posed two problems.
Solution helpful for one of the two problems described. I originally thought that the problem statement was a single issue. But now believe that there are two problems. Will re-state the second problem and re-submit to the service.
