No,there is now way you can turn the phone without power button.

This is hardware related.
If you take a look at the inside of the power button, there are 2 points making contact when you press the button.
If you press it, the software will recognize this and the screen will turn off.
If you press it long enough you'll get the "Do you want to turn off your device" message.
But, if water gets underneath the button, the 2 points may be making contact, because water/alcohol conducts.
if the button is very weak. Due to this, it may not properly work if you have used it for a long time.

Just open the HTC hero and clean the contacts and try again.If not working water may be poured on it.Check for the water marks on the boards.Then you have to replace the board or solder or re-hot it accordingly.

If you don't have hand on in it.Please take it to nearest service centre.

there is no way to do it from the phone but the court can get it from the cellular provider via court order. there is an app you can get for free in the market place called back up sms the app is by michele valantini it saves all your texts to your memory card and its free!!! i hope this helps!!!
