Disconnect the shift cable and see if the problem is with the shift box or the lower unit. If the lower, remove the bottom plug and look for water or metal where there should be clean oil.

If the shift box, take to the marina- they were a bear. Even just for cables.

SOURCE: 35hp Johnson evinrude outboard not running at full potential

Hi, did you buy your engine used? Sounds like your gonna have to get the carb or carbs cleaned. Its possible you could have a stopped up fuel filter, or not enough spark but i am guessing its gonna be the carbs. They got some gunk in em i bet. Probably old fuel turned to gunk from setting up. I had the same problem on my 40 horse.

Testimonial: "Hi, thank you very much for your help, I will strip the carb down and have a look. Once again, many thanks, I am very greatful"

SOURCE: ficht wont start cold, will with a jumper box, what

Check the voltage on the pink wire on the starter selonoid. Should have at least 10 volts while cranking, if voltage drops below 10V change the batteries, I had the same problem.

Did you unscrew the powervalve servo cables on the bracket of the rear cylinder by chance? Make sure that there is no play in those cables and make sure that the valves are opening all the way up.

Starting motor binding/grinding

I will try to help. As you describe the problem I wonder if the starter gear is not cut deep enough to give clearance on the flywheel or the end bushing is too short. A short bushing would allow the gear to travel too far on the starter shaft and smack the flywheel.

Also the flywheel position would change if your particular motor has thrust washers on the crankshaft.
You may not know if anyone milled the starter case or motor. Maybe if you ground off the tip of the bolts it would help.
