If the picture is jumping from top to bottom this is a vertical issue. The common cause on older Hitacjis is loose connections on the vertical output IC.

Tv comes on and then after a while the picture goes down to this scrunched up color lines in the middle of the set and sound goes off also. It is a Hitachi 60 inch big screen 1997 model

Sounds like you have broken solde joints on the vertical/horizontal board. I have a tip at http://www.fixya.com/support/r4751428-fix_no_vertica_drive_problem which explains the problem and how to fix it. Let me know if you need more help.

Thanks for using FixYa and for the generous rating.

Hitachi 60SDX88BA

no picture condition could be caused by a problem in the horizontal deflection circuit or a power supply failure. A horizontal deflection problem often are followed by open fuses due to shorted components such as a h.o. transistor ofcourse there are a lot more componentd that constitute this circuit. Another no picture condition could be caused by defective convergence power amps. these amps usually give an clear indicator when they are about to quit(color curved or missaligned, double color images etc.) this is a common problem with projection tvs and that is where I would tell the tv tech to start looking.

Vertical rolling on Hitachi 60SBX78B

It ended up being the Verizon Fios box. We recycled it and the picture stopped rolling. Thank you for being here to help. If I have any future questions, I'll definitely use your site.
