I have a Philips HTS3455/98 Home Theatre System, which i have only had for 6 months. For some reason i have no sound. When i turn the Volume right up i still have no sound. If you put you ear by the speakers, you can hear a faint scratching sound. Can anybody help me out at all.

There are two capacitors on the power board that are 470uf/35v. go to Radioshack and buy two catalog #272-1030 470uf/35v radial lead capacitors. if you have soldering wick and a soldering iron, then this will cost you under $3.00. when you remove them, the capacitors have a white strip with a negative sign on it. match this up with the shaded area on the board. put it back together, and it will work, and last a long time. I have this same system, and it wouldn't play any sound. so, I replaced the capacitors. Hope this helps!

I actually posted the wrong type of capacitors needed. I posted that you needed 470uf/25v (the same). You actually need 470uf/35v, so, you bought the correct type. In most cases, the voltage of the capacitors was too low. Thats why you need to get a bigger voltage (35v). So you can use the 35v capacitors without harm done.
the capacitors that are on there are 25v.

I have never attempted to fix anything electronic before. this time I thought what the heck, 1. try to fix it or 2. throw it away, I liked #1. So I went to Radio Shack, spent $3, and with guidance from a knowledgeable friend, replaced these two capacitors. The thing works GREAT now. Thanks, Corky1333! Your advice was excellent and I learned a little something about circuit boards.

Ok so I know Im bringing a dead thread back to life, but I replaced my capacitors the other day and it worked perfect for the actual surround sound speakers, however now the sub isnt working...If I unplug the surround sound speakers and turn the volume up to max I can put my ear to the sub and hear the music playing. It is clear however very very faint. Im not 100% sure where to go next. Any advise?

Hi all, some invaluable information on this page!
I own a Philips HTS3455 and on Monday night I turned it on and there was no sound. I tried everything imaginable and noticed that the audio was barely audible.
I followed the advice in replacing the 2 capacitors (the layout of the HTS3455 is different to the model in the image) and tested them with a multimeter before and after doing so.
I plugged everything back in and the old problem still exists and as before, the fan in the sub woofer is still not working.
Where to go to from here? Any extra advice?

I just resolved my HTS 3450 - No sound issue by replacing the two 470uF/25v caps with two 470uF/35v caps. Note that there are two large 470uF/200v caps on the same board. Do not replace these with 35v caps for obvious reasons. regarding the no fan issue... When I had the no sound problem I noticed that the cooling fan was not rotating. When I replaced the two caps, the sound returned but still no fan at power up. I checked a few minutes later and the fan was working. i believe the fan is tempurature controlled so check after using the unit for a while and it should be working. If not then replace the fan. So happy to have found this site and a cheap easy solution to save my Philips 3450. You cannot buy a HTS with this much bass anymore for under $1000. you could spend $500 plus and not get the bass. I had the same problem: my Philips HT 3450
started make some sound like "bizzzzz", and it would start to function
normally later. It started with a few seconds or a minute of
"bizzzzzz" and then it reached to half an hour, and then the sound
died totally!! I went online.
I replaced two black capacitors of (25v), as they were located in subwoofer
power board in the picture above, with two new 470uF/35Vcapacitors. Now, it
functions perfectly normal, and it is almost unbelievable to solve such an
electronic problem requiring an expert on our own, with your great help!! Keep
the good work up! And thanks a lot again for the picture and writing.

Thank you Corky1333! Your instructions were right on. I paid $1.29 per capacitor (#272-1030 470uf/35v) and with your image had no problem finding the faulty ones.Now my Philips HTS3450 sounds like new.

Try to change the source (eg. from FM to AUX and back to FM) after the unit has been on for a while and check if you have sound afterwards. Your problems sounds similar to how it started with mine.
Initially it simply took 5-10 minutes before I got sound. Sometimes changing the source from tv to dvd and back to tv made it give normal sound again. The 5-10minutes time gradually increased and after 3-4 months it took about an hour before it started playing sound and at that time also it started to buzz before it actually started playing sound.
For a while I used a hairdryer to heat the unit up which got it playing sound within 5 minutes.
Today I replaced the 2 capacitors with new ones from radioshack and problem is gone.

I have a Philips HTS3455/98 Home Theatre System, its been with me 4 almost 2 years. The system was working just fine the current had gone off and when it came on i have no sound. When i turn the Volume to max i can hear the song play very faint but before if i increase the volume to 10 it used be very loud. Kindly help me fix the problem its driving me nuts.

I had same issue and replaced caps and it worked for a few months. Now no sound again. Replaced caps again with no luck. Subwoofer standby light red when off and no green light when system on. What else could be wrong?
I have the HTS6600 and replaced the 2 capacitors (very simple thanks to Corky1333), however no volume still. Could it be anything else? No capacitors look blown and the soldering are all intact.
Did this over 2 years ago- was working fine since then, but ive noticed a new issue- now the volume at 'max' is nearly half of what it used to be.
Anyone else? should I replace the capacitors again?

Hi I have a Philips HT 3450 but lost the Subwoofer and speakers. Would anybody tell me if I can take out the subwoofer connection to my panasonic home theator system to hear the sound. ( Panasonic has a 6 CH audio in )

Long time between posts...but when I was trying to fix my system today...I noticed that they are 470uf / 25v...I bought 35v would it do anything to my system or should I go and get more 25v?

sorry, they are supposed to be 25v. I posted the wrong rating, so you are correct.
These caps are 1000uf/50V in my 6600PWR subwoofer, and its only the power board that has these. Mine made a buzzing sound after replacing the caps but it went away with the fan spinning down. I can barely hear the sub though? where is the volume control, on the DVD unit itself? Does the sub amp get a variable line input or does it use digital pins 1 and 5 to alter the volume? These also power up the sub with a 10Kohm resistor across them. Im running it as a seperate sub off a Sony using VGA pins 7-8 as sub input per another post.

It's in the amp board. I've taken mine apart and I haven't figured out what component it is. Mine would pop, click, hiss, and whine before it would finally come on and then one day it just crapped on me.
