DVD WS does not display right on Samsung 40'' HD 1080P LCD TV

When I watch a movie (DVD WS) on this TV I get a pciture in a long rectangular box that fills up the screen width wise but not top and bottom (so a really wide screen). The funny thing is at the beginning of the movie when the standard langauge appears it does fill up the whole screen but when the movie starts it squishes down to a long rectangular view....

What do I need to do to fix this?

The DVD is a 2.4:1 widescreen format, but when I have the TV (Vizio 32") set on "wide" it stretches it to about a 3:1 and leaves big black bars on the top and bottom. If I change the TV setting to "Normal" then it shows it in the 2.4:1 ratio, but leaves big black bars on all sides. Can't figure out how to get the right ratio and get it to fill up most of the screen (understanding that there will be a little black on top and bottom).

I have a Vizio 32" LCD HD widescreen that has a very similar problem. Previously, when watching my 16:9 DVDs, they filled the picture in "wide" mode as it should. Now, for reasons unknown to me, it has stopped doing so. When playing my widescreen DVDs in "wide" mode, the black bars appear at the top and bottom and the picture is stretched horizontally. I've searched both the tv manual and the DVR manual, as well as the menus on both, but have been unable to locate a setting that adjusts the aspect ratio. Honestly, I am at my wit's end. I paid a great deal for this television and I can't understand what has happened to make it stop working appropriately. I could really use some help.

Check the aspect ratio of your widescreen DVD. I'll assume that your flat panel TV is widescreen, which would mean it has a ratio of 16:9. Some movies are even wider than that (i.e. 2.35:1), so it would be normal for you to see black bars at the top and bottom. Look for a WS DVD described as 16:9 (usually shown on bottom on back). This should fill your TV screen and not distort the image. If you still see the black bars, you will need to check your DVD menu settings for widescreen aspect, and supply more info on the DVD player and TV.
