It would be a good idea to have the machine checked to see
if the stitch width control bar is damaged or some other part is

  • either look in the phone book for a sewing machine shop
or type in your browser, sewing machine shops for your city & town & it's should
    bring up some.

Singer 4423 how to sew a bar tack on denim?

Just set the stitch width selector to the width you want the bar tack and set the stitch length to zero. It will stitch in place until you stop or change the stitch settings.

Stitch selector knob on bernina 600, not Deco, is stuck and cannot select needle position, However the width of stitch part of the knob is working. This knob has 2 parts, needle position and width control

Your machine (Bernina 600 Record) has most likely frozen (seized) due to lack of regular maintenance. Don't panic. It can be fixed with a lot of elbow grease, good quality oil and a hairdryer. The following method has resurrected several Berninas I've picked up as "nonworking."

How can fix stuck needle bar on my Bernina 730

Wheel on right side that controls the needle up and down is very tight...

It was working now it seems to be frozen the needle part wont move

Easiest way to make a buttonhole...manual does not tell much info

Easiest way is to create a bar tack at one end of the buttonhole (widest stitch width and stitch length set to 0). Stitch maybe 4 or 5 stitches.
Then move needle all the way to the left, set stitch length to very short (maybe somewhere between 0 & 1), width to slightly less than half, stitch forward to the end of the buttonhole.
Then make another bar tack (as above). Move needle all the way to the right, set to less than half width, short stitch length, and stitch in REVERSE to first bar tack. To tie off, set width to 0 and length to 0 and stitch 2-3 times in place. Raise presser foot, pull gently on fabric and clip threads.

Elna SU needle position lever is very stiff

this is probably due to lack of use and just stiffening up of this lever, best thing is to take off the top cover and get some triflow oil into the lever area, then try to work it back and forwards. First though, always set the stitch length and stitch width dials to zero before you try to move the needle dial, this applies to changing the stitch selector too, always turn width and length to zero first to avoid wear on these parts internally.

If you are happy to delve a bit deeper into your machine internally you might want to join the Yahoo group called Elna Heirlooms where other Swiss elna owners share their love and knowledge of these machines, there will be message thread on this issue there for sure.

Setting stitch length

Get some scrap fabric. One dial is for the width of the zig zag stitch, the other dial is for the length of any stitch. First set both to ZERO. It won't move then set one to half way. This will show you which dial is which. If it is the width dial. You'll get a bar tack. If it is the length dial you'll get straight stitches.

How do you position the needle/ with which lever or dial? location?

Your model doesn't have a specific needle position adjustment. But you could try this - set it to the shell stitch or lingerie stitch on the stitch selector but leave the stitch width setting on zero, this may move the needle to the left most position with any luck.

Other possibility is to put it in a step of the buttonhole sequence, but again leave stitch width on zero and see if this moves the needle bar to the right or left for you.
