Opening RAW images from Nikon D70 on photoshop

Please can you tell me how to open RAW images in photoshop that are taken with my D70s Nikon. I have spent much time trying to do so and my photoshop CS will not recognize the format even though it is listed as an option in the "open with menu". Photoshop Help tells me that you can get plug ins but I cant find any leave alone one to do the above task - I find it all very confusing. I have now downloaded Picture Perfect which I have not used before and it is behaving very strangely - like opening images that were erased from the memory card some time ago - and will open only one of the RAW files on the memory card. I am also finding your web site difficiult as this is my second attempt to contact you the first being lost in the ether! Help would be much appreciated.

A Photoshop Raw file is a Photoshop PSD file without a header. The header
information must be entered when the file is imported into Photoshop. The
raw format is used import and export bitmap data using a very simple,
uncompressed binary format.

If you're using CS3, you'll need to update your version of ACR (it it's not already the latest). I expect there's an updated version that'll work with CS2 as well.

To view RAW files, you can use Bridge (which comes included with Photoshop)

  • Bernie Reeves Nov 30, 2008

"A raw file is a raw dump of the sensor data unaffected by any camera color conversion or tone curve. The advantage of Camera Raw is that YOU get to decide the white balance and the tone curve applied - not the camera.

"A raw capture looks REALLY WEIRD because all the response is flat with 1/2 the capture bits in the brightest stop. To make it look like what we are expecting a gamma curve must be applied." (Quotes excerpted from Photoshop Mac Forum adobe.com.)

    • Editor's note: When a .NEF Raw file is opened in Adobe Camera Raw Plugin ACR, a gamma curve is applied by default, so it doesn't look so weird, but we can apply various curves while in ACR.

Adobe Camera Raw ACR Frequently Asked Questions FAQ adobe.com.
Adobe Camera Raw ACR supported cameras list Adobe Camera RAW Camera List adobe.com.
Adobe Camera RAW Plugin is included with Photoshop CS CS2 CS3 and automatically installs with Photoshop.

Information about how to open .nef .cr2 .crw files in Photoshop and use Adobe Camera RAW is included.

Be sure to update ACR Plugin with the latest version for compatibility issues:

    Adobe Camera Raw 4.6 4.1 2.4 3.1 3.6 DOWNLOAD UPDATERS MAC adobe.com.
Adobe Camera Raw UPDATERS DOWNLOADS for WINDOWS adobe.com.

ACR 2.0 will not open .nef files from a D70s camera, but ACR 2.4 will. But ACR 2.4 -- the latest ACR Plugin for PS8/CS -- will not open Nikon D200 camera nef RAW files because the ACR 2.4 plugin was never written for the D200 RAW photos.

To open D200 .nef pictures, you will need CS2-PS9 with ACR 3.7 or later, so keep this in mind if your .nef or .cr2 files won't open with Adobe Camera Raw, you may need updaters or newer version of Photoshop.

To check which version of ACR is installed: Open Photoshop> Photoshop> About Plug-in> Camera Raw (will note the exact version).

Troubleshooting Why Nikon NEF PP opens instead of ACR:

If CS4 CS3 CS2 Adobe Camera Raw plugin will not open NEF RAW files -- Nikon NEF PP application opens instead -- the Nikon installer installs "Nikon NEF LE Plugin" aka "Nikon NEF Plugin" which overrides Adobe Camera RAW plugin in Photoshop.

In which case you will need to quit PS and go to Applications> Adobe Photoshop CS> Adobe Photoshop Only> File Formats AND remove the Nikon NEF LE Plugin from the folder if you want to open and use the free Adobe Camera RAW Plugin.

I have several Nikon D200 and D70 .nef files below for downloading.

This "raw" concept (bringing 100 percent of the sensor data into Photoshop) has long been a part of Bruce Fraser's scanning workflow HutchColor/Bruce Fraser’s hutchcolor.com DOWNLOAD scanning (.pdf) guide. With this in mind, I would hope the Adobe Scanner RAW plug-in is about ready ;)

    While the writer here used a Nikon D300 D200 and D70 to prepare this ACR online tutorial, Photoshop 10 9 8 7 CS3 CS2 CS1 was used in conjunction with Adobe Camera RAW 4.6, 2.4, 3.1, 3.6.

Make sure you are using the Adobe Camera Raw plugin (Camera Raw.8bi). Not the one from Nikon (Nikon NEF Plugin.8bi). Do a search for the Nikon plugin and move it out of the plugins folder tree or rename it to something like Nikon NEF Plugin.8bi.dontuse.

Also check for .XMP sidecar files. Elements chokes on some entries in these files and gives erronious error messages.

I have recently noticed a very thin vertical line (primarily red) in the photos taken with my D70. Can you tell me the cause and the cure?

Hi!
Cause - faulty CCD imager.
Cure - imager replacement.
It can be done only by Nikon authorized service center and if you're out of warranty - it will be expensive.

Sorry for the bad news.

I cannot open NEF files with Adobe elements, so what programma do I need in order to open these files? The photos were taken with a Nikon D70 as RAW files, and transferred to my laptop which runs on...

You can use Adobe Photoshop to edit the files in the nikon format or if you just want to view them you could use a .nef to .jpeg converter. I found one that will convert a batch of .nef files to .jpeg by just dragging and dropping them. You can find that here: http://www.reasoft.com/rea-nef-convert.shtml

Nikon NEF files no longer open in cs2

hi dear

The Nikon NEF Plug-in for Photoshop

(In Windows, search "plug" to find "P2_NEFPlugin_En.pdf" in the NikonPictureProjectReferenceManual folder. You should have copied this manual to your HD from your PictureProject CD when you installed PictureProject.)

D40x NEF Photoshop Plugin -

file: "Nikon NEF Plugin LE.8bi"

Search Windows for "*.8bi"

These two plugins can be found at C:\Program Files\Nikon\PictureProject

Follow these instructions for (taken from the above reference manual)

  • **Note: before you uninstall PictureProject back up all of you NEF files.

    "Installing the Nikon NEF Plug-in

Two Photoshop plug-ins are included with PictureProject: a Nikon NEF Plugin LE plug-in for viewing RAW images, and a Nikon YCC TIFF plug-in for viewing YCbCr-TIFF images (in Windows, these fi les have the extension “*.8bi”). These plug-ins can be used with Adobe Photoshop Elements version 2.0 or later and with Adobe Photoshop version 6.0 or later (Windows) or 7.0 or later (Macintosh). Both plug-ins are copied to the PictureProject application folder when PictureProject is installed (in the Macintosh version, the plug-ins are copied
to the “File formats” folder in the PictureProject application folder). If a copy of Photoshop is detected at installation, the plug-ins will also be copied to the Photoshop plug-ins folder. Users who install Photoshop after installing PictureProject should fi rst uninstall PictureProject, and then reinstall PictureProject when installation of Photoshop is complete."

After you open the RAW NEF picture file in Photoshop save it in lossless .psd format for further editing.

How can I use the Adobe Camera Raw plugin after installing Nikon Software?

During the installation of Nikon View or Picture Project, your system is checked for an installed copy of Adobe Photoshop. If a copy with the minimum version is found, Nikon View will install file format filters which will allow Photoshop to open a NEF/RAW file directly (there are other plugins for YCBCR TIFF format from supported cameras). If you have the Adobe Photoshop "Camera Raw" software installed (optional in Photoshop version 7, included in Photoshop version CS) the Nikon file filters will open the file. If you prefer to continue using the Adobe software, find and remove the following plugins: Nikon NEF Plugin (Nikon View) Nikon NEF Plugin LE (Picture Project) After a restart of Adobe Photoshop, the Adobe Photoshop "Camera Raw" plugin will handle the opening of Nikon NEF/RAW format files. Please note that there was an update for Adobe Camera Raw plugin for support of D70 and Coolpix 8700 RAW files, if you encounter difficulty opening raw files from any Nikon product after removal of the Nikon Plugins, please visit the Adobe support site to obtain the appropriate update for the Adobe Camera Raw plugin.

NEF Image will not open - Macintosh

RAW NEF images from Nikon cameras are proprietary formatted raw data directly from the cameras's sensor. If the images are improperly transferred to the computer they will not be able to be opened and will give an "Unsupported File Format" warning. Macintosh OS X has an "Image Capture" application (found in: Hard Drive/Applications/)that can be used to transfer images. If "Image Capture" is used NEF files will be corrupted and will not be able to be read. Only Nikon View, or manually dragging images from the mounted card, should be used to transfer NEF's. To disable "Image Capture": Double-click to open the hard drive and then the "Applications" folder Double-click "Image Capture" From the "Image Capture" menu choose "Preferences..." In the "When a camera is connected" pop-up choose "No Application" Close the Preferences window and Quit Image Capture After disabling Image Capture, it will not launch when the camera is connected and you can use Nikon View to properly transfer NEF images.
