Does anyone know anything about the coolant system on a 307
Does anyone know what part of the cooling system on a 307 that sits on top of the engine and runs into the firewall. Its a black elbow with a big round top that sits on the back of the engine to the left of the distributer and runs into the firewall. I managed to break loosening the tranny.

There is no bleeder screw , don't need it if done correctly.
Important: It is necessary to maintain the coolant level at the top of the surge tank label to insure all the air has been purged from the cooling system.
Fill the cooling system.
Slowly add a mixture of 50/50 DEX-COOL and clean, drinkable water. Refer to Approximate Fluid Capacities in General Information.
Important: It is necessary to maintain the coolant level at the top of the surge tank label to insure all the air has been purged from the cooling system.
Install surge tank cap.
Start the engine.
Run the engine at 2,000-2,500 RPM until engine reaches normal operating temperature.
Allow the engine to idle for 3 minutes.
Shut the engine off.
Allow the engine to cool.
Top off the coolant as necessary.
Inspect the cooling system for leaks.
Rinse away any excess coolant from the engine and the engine compartment.
Inspect the concentration of the engine coolant using J 26568
You must have a coolant leak. If there are no signs of a leak, you may have a gasket on the engine that has gone bad, and the coolant is being pushed out the exhaust system. The coolant expands when hot and cools when the engine cools. During the cooling stage the cooling system creates a suction on the coolant in the reservoir and draws enough coolant back into the system to keep it full. Apparently you are loosing enough coolant somewhere that the reservoir can not fill the system before going dry.
I'm pretty sure the radiator fan on these is controlled by a thermostat and will therefore normally operate only when required hence coming on and turning off at will. It is also not unusual for the fan to remain on after turning the engine off. If you sit and wait a few minutes after turning off the engine the fan will shut down eventually.
1. Turn on the heater controls. Remove the bottom R/ hose entirely and then remove the top R/hose from the radiator end. (If the top hose has not been replaced previously (or recently) then replace it with a new one as well). Then flush the cooling system.
2. Reconnect the new hoses and refill with the correct spec coolant as stipulated by the manufacturer. Do not use anything other than the coolant type/mix specified by the manufacturer. Start the engine and continue to refill the radiator as the level drops. Check and re-check the coolant levels. Make sure you check the overflow reservoir and top up to the coirrect level.
3. You will need to bleed air from the cooling system because air will be trapped and the cooling system will not operate properly with air in it. If you do not know the correct procedure for doing this on your model you will need to have it done by a competent mechanic familair with your vehicle. Failure the bleed air from the system will result in the engine overheating, due to air locks in the cooling system, and possible expensive engine damage.
TO CHANGE RADIATOR FIRST YOU TURN OFF RADIO FIRST TO KEEP FROM LOSING RADIO CODE.DISCONNECT NEGATIVE BATTERY CABLE.RAISE FRONT OF VECHICLE SUPPORT ON JACK STANDS.REMOVE THE LOWER SPLASH SHIELDS.NOW YOU NEED TO DRAIN THE COOLING SYSTEM.CATCH COOLANT IN A LARGE DRAIN PAN.REUSE COOLANT IF ITS FAIRLY NEW.IF COOLANT VERY OLD CHANGE IT.PUT OLD COOLANT IN SOME EMPTY CONTAINER TAKE TO A GARAGE OR WHOEVER DISPOSE IT.DONT POUR ON GROUND.HARMFUL TO THE ENVIRONMENT.MOVE THE AIR INTAKE DUCT PASSES OVER THE TOP RADIATOR HOSE.NOW WHEN ALL COOLANT DRAIN OUT.LOOSEN UPPER AND LOWER RADIATOR HOSE CLAMPS.THEN DETACH THE RADIATOR HOSES FROM THE FITTINGS.IF THEY ARE STUCK GRASP EACH HOSE NEAR THE END WITH A PAIR OF ADJUSTABLE PLIERS AND TWIST IT TO BREAK THE SEAL THEN PULL IT OFF REMOVE SMALL COOLANT SURGE LINES FROM TOP OF RADIATOR THAT GOES TO THE OVER FLOW RESERVOIR..DISCONNECT COOLING FAN ELECTRICAL CONNECTOR.THEN REMOVE THE COOLING FAN.REMOVE DISCONNECT AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION COOLER LINES GET READY TO CATCH TRANSMISSION FLUID THEN PLUG LINES. NOW UNSCREW THE FOUR BOLTS TWO ON EACH SIDE OF THE RADIATOR THAT ATTACH RADIATOR TO THE AIR CONDITIONER CONDENSOR CAREFULLY TIP TOP OF THE RADIATOR SLIGHTLY TOWARDS THE ENGINE.REMOVE THE UPPER RADIATOR SEAL AND LIFT RADIATOR FROM THE ENGINE.NOW IS THE TIME TO REPLACE THE UPPER AND LOWER RADIATOR HOSES WITH NEW ONES SINCE ALL COOLANT REMOVE I WOULD REPLACE THERMOSTAT AND RADIATOR PRESSURE CAP.NOW WHEN YOU GET READY TO INSTALL NEW RADIATOR USE SHEETS OF CARD BOARD PROTECT RADIATOR FINS AND CORES FROM DAMAGE WHILE SITTING RADIATOR BACK IN PLACE.ONCE YOU GET UPPER AND LOWER HOSES IN PLACE ALSO PLACE SMALL SURGE HOSES FROM THE OVER FLOW RESERVOIR TO RADIATOR NEW THERMOSTAT AND TRANSMISSION COOLER LINES ALL HOOK UP. START POURING ANTIFREEZE IN THE RADIATOR OR OVERFLOW RESERVOIR IF RADIATOR DONT HAVE RADIATOR CAP ON IT.POUR A FULL GALLON ANTIFREEZE AND A HALF MORE IF LONG AS THE COOLANT STAYS ON THE COLD LEVEL MARK ON OVERFLOW RESERVOIR DONT OVER FILL.IF YOU POUR ANTIFREEZE IN RADIATOR KEEP POURING ANTIFREEZE UNTIL LEVEL STOP DROPPING AND LEVEL OFF AT RADIATOR TOP.START ENGINE CHECK FOR LEAKS. LET ENGINE RUN UNTIL IT WARM UP TOP RADIATOR HOSE GET HOT.WATCH COOLANT LEVEL IN RADIATOR OR COOLANT OVERFLOW RESERVOIR WHEN THERMOSTAT OPENS COOLANT LEVEL WILL DROP.ONCE YOU HAVE ENOUGH COOLANT IN THE SYSTEM COOLANT LEVEL WILL STOP DROPPING.THEN YOU READY TO GO.LET ENGINE SIT A LITTLE WHILE CHECK COOLANT LEVEL AGAIN.COOLANT LEVEL IN THE OVER FLOW RESERVOIR SHOULD BE AT HOT MARK FOR HOT ENGINE AND WHEN ENGINE COLD COOLANT LEVEL SHOULD BE AT THE COLD MARK.IF POUR ANTIFREEZE IN THE RADIATOR COOLANT LEVEL SHOULD BE AT TOP OF RADIATOR BELOW PRESSURE CAP.
Try removing the radiator cap when the engine is cool and top off the coolant level. Start the engine with the cap of and let it run to operating temperature which is when the thermostat opens. If you lightly grab the upper radiator hose. If it is cool or warm, the thermostat has not opened. If it is hot, the thermostat has opened. At that time have someone assist you by sitting in the car to rev the engine up (1800 to 2000rpm) and hold it there while you once again top off the radiator and tighten the cap. DO NOT BRING THE RPM DOWN TO IDLE WITHOUT HAVING THE CAP ON TIGHT! THE HOT COOLANT WILL OVERFLOW FROM THE RADIATOR! Then let the engine run to see if the air has escaped. You may have to do this procedure more than once. If at any time you feel that the engine is getting too hot, tighten the radiator cap and then shut the engine off. Then let it sit and repeat the steps above. Constantly monitor your temperature gauge at all times.
Hello ,this is what i do for this vehicle .First take off one of the heater hoses going to the top of the water pump.Next make sure the radiator cap is ON .Then take a funnel ,stick it in the waterpump tube .Then poor the antifreeze in slowly until antifreeze comes out of the hose that was taken off .this will put antifreeze into the engine and radiator.:)
there is no drain plug on the engine block unfortunately, however taking the lower radiator hose off will drain almost all the coolant out off the block. then reconnect the lower hose and fill completely with just water and flush solution let sit for a few minutes. then take lower hose off again let it completely drain. reconnect lower hose and fill with 60/40 mix of coolant this will protect to -40 degrees F. when you have it completely full keep cap off radiator and start vehicle turn your heater on hot and the fan to high. top off with coolant and replace cap. there should be no need to bleed system of air. please rate this solution.
