Drains in top freezer models almost always plug up with ice near the top. Once the drain is open it's a good idea to add an aluminum or copper "heat probe" attached to the main defrost heater to transfer some of its heat an inch or so into the drain to keep it from refreezing. Depending on the brand a kit is available or you can make one out of a length of #12 bare copper wire. Form a "shepard's hook" and simply hang it off the heater (calrod types only)
You need to clean out the defrost water drain and, if it was made prior to March 2010 install a revised grommet at the end of the drain tube. Unplug it and use a hair dryer to remove the ice from the bottom and also into the slots at the rear of the evaporator cover.
Once its all melted go to the rear of the fridge, take the cover off and look for the end of the drain tube just to the right of center in the machine compartment. Pull off the existing grommet and either clean or replace it with the new type.

Thanks to all who spent money or shared their experience to have somebody do this repair, and I really mean it.
I have a Whirlpool TopLoad Fridge (not a side by side).
Things you'll need
30 minutes
Small socket for cardboard panel on lower back and panel inside freezer
Bicycle Pump
4 Towels
Hair Dryer
1. Take everything out of freezer
2. Turn dials off in fridge for both compartments
3. Pull fridge out so you can get behind it and unplug it
4. Be vigilant of ice maker line if installed
5. Pull cardboard panel off on back
On the left side you should see the back of the skinny drip pan and a small line. That line goes from the freezer and is most likely clogged.
6. Blow dry the back of the freezer enough so the ice is thawed at the bottom of the back panel.
7. Remove the two screws on the back panel. You may just be able to pull it toward you enough to get behind it. You'll see the coils and fan, and underneath these you may see some ice sheets and there should be a hole. That is the drain line that is clogged. I heated up some water and poured it over the drain to thaw the line. You may want to remove the crisper drawers and put some towels down there to catch the overflow. Once the ice is thawed enough at the drain. Go to the back of the fridge and place the end of the bicycle pump at the bottom of the drain hose. Apply pressure to get a good seal but keep pumping. You may have to go back and forth between pumping and thawing, but you'll know it is clear when you hear air going into the freezer and then the wonderful moment when water drips into the drip pan as advertised!
Keep those fridges less full so that the door stays sealed and keep the seal clean and also keep your doors from having too much stuff so the weight of the door doesn't pull away.
Okay, put it back together, turn everything on and be careful of your cord and lines when pushing the fridge back. Thank the Lord ours has wheels and man,was it cruddy underneath. Vacuum those coils underneath the fridge too for proper air circulation.
Blessings to you!

SOURCE: whirlpool refridgerator is leaking water on the freezer side
WAS IT LEAKING FROM INSIDE THE FREEZER OR FROM BOTTOM OF FRIDGE? ONCE IN A WHILE YOU NEED TO TAKE OUT THE ICE BIN AND DUMP ICE OUT AND CLEAN IT. HOW CAN THE ICE MACHINE OVERFLOW WITH ICE WHEN THE ICE IN THE TRAY WON'T BUDGE? NEED CLARIFICATION. SOUNDS LIKE YOU EITHER HAVE A BAD ICE MAKER MODULE OR THE SOLENOID FOR THE ICE ON THE WATER VALVE IS BAD.

After looking carefully at the exploded views of this refridgerator

I believe your problem is caused by a leaking hose or fitting for the water dispenser
Pay close attention to items # 11 and 19 on the diagram labeled Refridgerator door parts
Try turning off the water supply to the dispenser and see if the problem is resoleved... if so you know thats where the problem is
SOURCE: An intermittent stream of water from the back top
This is caused by a design flaw in Gladiator Freezerators. The problem is caused whenever the auto-defrost cycle is active. This causes the frost on the coils to melt and flow to the drain tube. If the tube is blocked by ice having formed inside, the water has nowhere to go except down into the freezer compartment where it aagain freezes and forms an iceberg. The solution is to defrost the drain tube but this is only a tempo fix, because eventually it will freeze again. A more permanent solution is to remove the rear cover in the top compartment and expose the cooling coil and the defrost heater. Carefully wrap a 2-3 ft. long piece of bare copper wire, about 14-12 ga. several turns around the defrost heater and extend it down the drain tube located at the bottom right hand side of the drain tray. The little bit of heat transmitted down this wire is enough to keep the tube from refreezing. This fix is now available as a kit that Sears uses to take care of this problem but their kit does not work as well as the above. Good Luck!
