HL-S5687W looses picture and sound after heating up. When I change the channel, the picture returns. The fan is not coming on.

This does not but does in one way make some sense(I had to read your question a few times).

The key here is the fan does not turn on-----If any of the fans (lamp or others to a lesser degree do not come on: The lamp fan must come on or in a short amount of time--it should turn the set off and some have a lamp light and a temp light----

The set monitors the temperature of the lamp especially when set is turned off---it will not turn the lamp off until it cools to a specific temperature is reached----hence if set on for while and just unplugged which will kill the power to the lamp fan the lamp or even ballast that drives the lamp can be damaged.

Voltage to the fan can be measured and it must come on when set is powered up-----issue could be either fan is bad or no voltage is reaching it===most 2 wire fans will have the voltage marked on them--24vdc equals 24 volts Direct Current etc.

If a fan NEVER COMES ON (especially the large lamp fan) sooner or later something is going to get melted or fry.

Your description is a very good one but the issue is a bit rare (fan dead).

I would if there first check for voltage at the fan when set is turned on---if its there but fan not running the fan is bad.

Seen a few where dirt on the fan or even moving the fan blades made the fan kick on but by then you KNOW it is bad.

Let me know if you have questions or what you find.

KDS-R60XBR2 power led blinks 4 times,

There are three fans the one that usually fails is located on top of the optical block and cannot be reached by the owner unless you take the set apart yourself. What is happening is that one of the fans are not spinning fast enough or has stopped altogether. The best solution is to replace all three fans cleaning may not be enough to get a slow fan up to speed, and the tech should blow out the dust in the duct work. This is what the tech coming out will (or should) be doing. Also some fans will have an intermittent startup, and cause this intermittently, so it is a good idea just to replace the fans instead of just cleaning them.
