The most likely cause is the inverter board located just below the screen behind the bazel, go to www.ebay.com type make and model of laptop, refine search to inverter board. The second less likely problem is the backlight behind the LCD display, [built in]

any modern web cam will work (not XP)
any mic for a PC works, its just a simple mic.
if in a hurry, got to any PC store. BEST buy? (i tossed a coin)
walk in say have DV7 laptop with windows 7 ( or what it is)
then ask for headphones or one onces with boom mic.
like you see vast folks do with SKYPE.
if PC is XP windows, good luck finding things that work
but you can. XP is dead now for 3 years.

the fan on all PC's need to be cleaned every year
or they all pack up and overheat or make noise.
if the the fan, free of any lint makes noise (not blow sound)but
racket, sounds, the bearing inside are shot.
no fan made lasts for ever,
but longer that the HDD, and batteries, for sure.
but way less the 20-30years or more for CHIPS.
its just a dc brush motor with bearings.
some are AC motors inside,(with 3 phase driver inside and no brushes, fancy) but is of no matter, noise bad is bad fan.
its really that simple.
keep in mind folks in text box can not hear your bad fan.

Which version of Windows are you running? It sounds like you may need to reinstall your operating system. It is fairly simple to do this with windows xp without losing everything you have saved and installed.
