Try connecting the external hard drive to another computer to recover/backup your data.
When you have such a large capacity hard drive, it pays to have a second large capacity hard drive to backup your data in the event of the other hard drive dying.Hard drives do fail especially if you accidently drop it.

SOURCE: how to use hitachi simpletouch external 320gb hard

Hello

If the HHD gets power and you can feel the drive spinning, you can try these steps and see if your problem is solved. Go to:

control panel
Administrative tools
Computer management
Storage
Disc management

Now you should see your drive in the schematic below. Right click on it and choose the option to change drive letter or paths. Now just assign a new drive letter to the drive, restart your computer and it should work fine.

If you cannot see any power light flickering or feel movement on the drive when you power it up, then there is a other problem. Hope this can help you.

Best regards
Andrea

SOURCE: Hard drive isn't recognized

Great advice tech8 !!! That worked for me. I was frustrated with this problem for the last month. It looks like my chief problem was that the drive letter previously being used for this HDD was assigned to a different network path. It looks like it didn't automatically give a new drive letter. Your solution worked great!

THANK YOU!

SOURCE: Hitachi External Hard Drive (500GB) Beeping sound

Probably not. You can try putting it in the freezer overnight (in a bag please, don't get moisture in it) but most likely if you must have the files back it will take professional help.

SOURCE: Computer doesn't recognize my external HD

Test the HD on a different computer, if you get same problem, then the disk can be faulty. Backup your data ASAP, then replace either exernal hard disk enclosure, or the hard disk drive, depending on what is faulty.

If you get no problem on other computers, then the system is causing the problem. In that case try doing a system restore to a recent date before the problem started. If that does not work, then you will have to reinstall the system.

Computer won't recognize external usb hard drive

try it on another computer if that dosent work you should
reformat your computer but first backup all your data by putting your another internal hardrive on your computer and move all your files you need to the empty hardrive and after that take the hardrive with all your stuff in it off the computer and then reformat the hardrive which the external hardrive does not work on and install a new operating system then put the other hardrive with all your stuff back on your computer and transfer your stuff into the hardrive with a operating system then try the external hardrive

OR
you can burn all your stuff into a CD or a DVD
OR
you can put all your stuff into FlashDrives and then after you reformat the hardrive with an operating system put your stuff back into the computer and after that the external hardrive should work

Lifestudio isn't installed on my pc anymore and when i plug in the external hdd a light comes on but nothing happens

1. From what I read it may be the port drivers that are not installing for the USB port you have connected you hard drive to.
2. Check the manufacturers site for driver updates and hard drive requirements
3. It may be that the driver are not for the OS that you have or you may have to download them.
4. Try another cable ( USB)
5. Last it may be the internal electronics of the drive itself that may not be writing or reading the information sent by the pc to the port .
You may need a new case with new electronics ( hard drive main board).

My computer won't recognize my harddrive

if your computer came with a motherboard disc the drivers could be on it
click start control panel administrive tools ,computer management ,device manager look through all of your devices if you see a yellow question mark?or exclamation mark ! or red x
right click to reinstall drivers or
if you can see your usb but its not working:
ports(com&lpt)right click update driver"
sometimes the wires inside the cable will be damaged due to bending or stretching or placing heavy equipment upon the cable,
just replace the cable of the hard disk, when you plugged the external disk drive you got that windows could recognize the USB device change the cable everything should work fine again,
check the USB leads that attach to the motherboard usually red-white-green-black make sure they are securely seated and have no dust build up on them dust will cause static and a lot of unforeseen problems also make sure the computers Ram and Cmos battery are securely seated
hope this helps

How to use Disk Management To start Disk Management:
  1. Log on as administrator or as a member of the Administrators group.
  2. Click Start, click Run, type compmgmt.msc, and then click OK.
  3. In the console tree, click Disk Management. The Disk Management window appears. Your disks and volumes appear in a graphical view and list view. To customize how you view your disks and volumes in the upper and lower panes of the window, point to Top or Bottom on the View menu, and then click the view that you want to use.

I've so.. its not broken.

I just want to copy files back and forth as in a regular harddrive. The computer recognizes the device (devices and printers), but will not identify it when I select 'computer'

Even though the drive is recognized, it is probably not formatted, which means you can't store any files on it yet. You will have to format it before any data can be written to it.

1. Open Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Computer Management

2. In the LEFT PANE, find the "Storage" heading, then find "Disk Management" and click it. Windows will show you a graphical representation of all of the hard disks installed in your system. Find the new Hitachi drive in the UPPER-RIGHT PANEL, and RIGHT-CLICK it.

NOTE: BE SURE YOU CHOOSE THE CORRECT DRIVE IN THIS STEP! If you choose the MAIN drive, the one where Windows is installed, you could DESTROY THE DATA on it and render your system UNBOOTABLE. YOU'VE BEEN WARNED!

3. When you RIGHT-CLICK on the NEW HITACHI HDD, you will see the "Format..." option. Click the "Format..." option and follow the prompts to format the new HDD.

4. When the FORMAT operation is finished, you will be able to use the new HDD to store files.

There are MANY tutorials available which explain this process; read the section titled "Formatting a Secondary Hard Drive" on the following page for more details:

http://www.ehow.com/how_6026_format-hard-drive.html

Good luck; let us know how this turns out.
