DVD Player freezes frame in middle of disk and then stops

At first I thought the disk was scratched since my year and one-half grandson had been playing with that particular disk and this was why the disk was  freezing at the same point during several attempts to play it.  After it froze the picture the disk drawer opened without me doing anything further.
Tried several other DVDs and same result occurred.
The machine I have is a JVC Model XV-N55 DVD/ Super VCD/VCD/CD Player.
Thanks,
Jacquelyn Gallo

Just ran jVC Cleaner disc and freezing still occurs. Noted that
freezing now begins at 18 second mark. When I tried to
run Cleaner disc a second time, it did not even make it to
    the main menu screen.

    On several attempts machine became stuck on Reading screen;
then went to Open command. On last attempt after being
stuck on Reading Screen, No Disc message appeared.

"No Disc " message on different disks usually means a lens problem, as already suggested you need to access the lens pickup after removing the dvd cover, and to clean the lens with Q Tips and isopropyl alcohol.

This kind of maintainance should be performed by a technician , if you decide to do it yourself, unplug the unit before servicing it, and be very careful.

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Based on your description and since the error happens on the same position, possible a mechanical problem with the traverse mechanism. This is the metal rod that the lens carriage move along from center of disc to edge of disc. Pls reference below image.
DVD Player freezes frame in middle of disk and the - 13ac81a.jpg
Corrective measure therefore would require opening the unit, locating and cleaning this metal rod and all other attendant mechanism/parts including the worm gear and re-application of appropriate lubricant.

Just a start, do postback how things turned up or should you need additional information. Good luck and Thank you for using FixYa.

Hi

Have you tried cleaning the disc itself and do you have a lens cleaner for your unit. Keep us posted. Thanks

  • Anonymous Dec 04, 2008

    HI

Sopunds like a damage lens/crystal to read vcd's. Is this under warranty still? if it is call your manufacturer for replacement. if not bring this to a servicer on your area and chances are some parts needs to be replaced.

    Thanks for using fixya!

FREEZES UP AND STOPS.SCREEN SAYS CANNOT READ DISC OR UNSUPPORTED FORMAT

Check the disk for scratches, and attempt to play it on another DVD player or your computer, if it has a DVD drive installed. The drive will have DVD written on the front. If the disk isn't a commercial DVD but playable on the computer then the problem is a unsupported format. To make sure your DVD player is working correctly put a known good DVD the player to ensure it still works.

The DVR keeps freezing on a frame. When it does,

Usually when a player keeps freezing on a single frame of a dvd, it means that the disc is scratched. When it "sticks", the dvd will usually stop moving (on the part of the disc with a scratch) and the remote will not work. First, look at the dvd and look to see if there is a visible smudge or scratch on the disc. Fingerprints are a common problem with dvds. I suggest you try to clean the dvd in case it is just dirty and if it still doesn't work, some companies make disc repair kits. You could probably find one at walmart or radio shack. These kits repair the scratches in the disc I hope this helps, and good luck! Sincerely, Der Strom

DVD freezes when playing on a Sony SLV D300P DVD/VCR

That particular unit is very sensitive to scratched or dirty disks. Remove the disk and make sure there are no finger prints, peanut butter & jelly, or popcorn butter stains on the back side. If there is, gently wash the disk under warm water with a DROP of mild dish detergent, being careful not to scratch the surface. Rinse the disk well and dry with a soft, lint free cloth (like an old cotton t-shirt) again being careful to avoid scratching the disk. Replace the disk and play.

If the disk is scratched, there is little hope of fixing the scratch so the unit can read it.....

My xbox 360 frezzes when i play games. HELP PLEASE!!

I recommend setting your XBOX down on a level and hard surface (don't put it upright on a stand). I have seen many disks with radially arching scratches (the worst possible type of scratch for a CD/DVD) that seem to be caused by some of the optical drives (DVD drive) of the at least three different ones that the XBOX 360's come with), and I believe that keeping the drive tray horizontal, level, and being very careful with the Disks may prevent the scratches that may be causing your freezing.
I have also seen freezing in XBOX 360 games for no apparent reason at all, I thought it may be overheating at one point and made sure the console had plenty of space around it to breath and that seemed to help. Since you've had yours for a year and a half (mines only been out of the box for 3 months, so the main board is pretty clean yet), it may need internal cleaning (can be done with static free canned compressed air, or better yet by an electronics bench Tech.). If in a smoking environment, the tar and dust combining is more than likely the culprit.
Let us know if you've already tried the above, and Good luck.
