I've had this system for 15 months. It worked fine till last night when it just stopped working for no reason. When I turned it on, the TV screen was blank (Not blue-screened \"NO SIGNAL\"), it just showed a Grey screen. I reset it by pressing and holding the On/Off button but it did not work. I am sure it's not my HDMI cable because when I switched the cable to my dvd player, it worked just fine, and also the 4 red lights on my controller were blinking ... I took it (PS3) and connected it to my other TV (panasonic plasma), the same problem existed ...just a blank screen with no video
Try this:
Make sure the system is off. Now hold down Power Button for 8-10 seconds, until you hear the beep.
If you hear the beep, that means your video settings are reset and now you should be able to choose your input and configure it.

Please do the things as follows:
1-HDMI is available in several versions. The PLAYSTATION 3 is compatible with HDMI version 1.3 or higher, which will take full advantage of Blu-ray Disc™ high-definition video. There are also "Type A" and "Type B" connectors. The PLAYSTATION 3 uses the 19-pin Type A connector, which will allow resolutions up to 1080p.
The HDMI cable is not included with the PLAYSTATION 3. If you are using an HDMI to DVI converter, you may wish to remove this adaptor.
2- The resolution output (i.e., picture quality) of the PLAYSTATION 3 will depend on three factors:
The type of cable used and the inputs available on the TV or display monitor.
The maximum resolution the TV or display monitor can support. The PLAYSTATION 3 can output two types of resolution: HD and SD. Refer to the TV or display monitor's owner's manual to check which video modes are supported.
The maximum resolution programmed into the source material (movie or game). Refer to the software packaging for information on maximum resolution details or contact the publisher directly.
3- Try connecting with the supplied AV Cable instead of the HDMI to see if you can get a successful installation. This will help determine where the problem may be with your particular HMDI setup and/or equipment.
4- Disconnect any coaxial cables at the point closest to the television. Signals sent through coaxial cables may cause interference with the sound and picture outputted from the PLAYSTATION 3 which results in buzzing and humming noises from your display and speakers.

Make sure the HDMI Cable is free of any cuts, frays or other visible damage.
Try using a different the HDMI Cable on the PLAYSTATION 3.
Try installing the PLAYSTATION 3 to another TV or display (i.e., monitor).
Try using the HDMI Cable with a different PLAYSTATION 3 system.
Perform the following steps to reset the Video Output Settings.
Make sure the HDMI cable is connected to the [HDMI OUT] port on the back of the PLAYSTATION 3 system.
Connect the other end of the HDMI cable into the [HDMI Input] port of the TV or display monitor.
While the PLAYSTATION 3 system is in standby mode (red light on the front of the system), hold down the touch-sensitive On/Off button on the front of the system until the system goes into standby mode again . (So the light cycle would go from: red light to --> green light --> then back to red light) This will ensure that you have held down the On/Off button long enough to reset the Video Output Settings.
Turn ON the PLAYSTATION 3 and once the system finishes powering up, the Video Output Settings will automatically reset to the standard resolution (or detect the current display output settings of your TV/monitor).
If resetting does not auto-detect your HDTV, see next step below.
NOTE: As of system software update version 1.60, the PLAYSTATION 3 can automatically detect an HDMI connection to a TV. If the PLAYSTATION 3 is turned on with an HDMI cable connected, the screen for switching video output settings will be displayed automatically. (Does not function unless the TV that is connected by the HDMI cable is turned on.)
As of version 1.80 of the system update for the PLAYSTATION 3, the PLAYSTATION 3 can upscale the video content of PlayStation® format software, PlayStation®2 format software, and DVDs to HD resolution.

shut down your PS3. Unplug everything from your memory card ports and
usb slots. Unplug the power cable at both ends (from the wall and the
ps3). Then switch the PS3 hard switch (on off, lever, not the soft
method of turning it on by a mere touch). Leave it that way for 10
minutes. Plug power cable back in at the PS3 and then at the surge
protector/power-strip (wall). Turn in on with the switch and then use
the soft method (described above) on the front. That should fix it. If
not, send it back for a warranty exchange. Good luck.

it is the comunication between hdmi from the ps3 to the tv
if you unplug it from the console and reconnect it (when powerd on) it should do the trick

I am sorry to inform you but there is no other option but to get it serviced by Sony..i had the same issue with the PS3 and it wasnt under warranty and had to shell out money....
Another possibility is if you have one of those TVs where getting an HDCP handshake is an issue (Some TVs require some odd order of turning the device on, waiting some time, turning the TV on). But you said you've gotten the PS3 on before without hassle, so I doubt that's the problem
Turn off your PS3. When you press the power button to turn it on, HOLD THE POWER BUTTON for about 5 seconds, until you hear a beep. This will reset the PS3 output to standard 480. Make sure you're connected via a plain old multi-out cable to the composite (not component, not HDMI) input on your monitor/TV.
Everything will work fine.
You can then change your video output settings in the XMB back to whatever HD resolution you want, and try connecting to your monitor again via HDMI or component

1. Power Off the PS3 via the power switch in back and power back on w/switch.
2. Hold Power Button on the Front until you hear 3 beeps.
3. Then go through the initial setup and then run a full Format via System > Format. (will take approx 3 1/1 hours). You may need to have our AV cables ready if your using HDMI (in case HDMI isn't detected after initial reset).
if it works fine, unless :-
hopefully your cable is dead
put back the basic composite cable sold with the PS3 on the TV, do the "three bips" thing, check if there is sound and image
are you sure you're good enough with electronics not to have damaged a part in the PS3? opening it voids the warranty for something as it's easy to break those little things in it ... (even when putting the top back)....
And if its still persist let me knw :)
Your Hard Drive has stopped working or BIOS is damaged.

Moreover, there is no easy fix my friend; if it's just the Hard Drive it could take you 10 - 15 minutes to fix with the new Hard Drive in hand.

Hi and welcome to FixYa,
Initially, the blinking controller lights indicate that it is charging. If it is continuously doing so, might it not just indicate that the battery requires replacement since it will not longer accept a charge. The average charging time would be about an hour and would be indicated by the absence of the blinking light(s) on the controller.
To verify, when the PS3 displays the startup screen, pls press the PS button (middle of the controller) on the top right hand of corner of the screen, battery status of the controller would be displayed. if the display shows running/changing mnumbers 1,2,3,1,2,3,1,2,3, then the controller is charging.

Actually if you do have a ps2 you don`t really need a Dvd upconverter because Ps3 is a full Dvd player +blu Ray Hi Definition.I suggest to take the dvd out and just use the ps3 as a Dvd player

How can I get to the start up screen when there is NO VIDEO at all on the screen ???? This is the main problem ...I think
I did all of this. Unplugged the power cable from the system, switched it off (from the back), left over night ...Plugged it back and turned back on, did soft reset ...None will work, and by the way, the system is out of warantee or I won't be here paying $10 to get it fixed

My PS3 (80GB) is connected via HDMI to Sony LCD Z series TV. Intermittently - the audio disappears - video is still there. When I do the video setting reset using the touch sensitive button and keepint it pressed unless I hear the beep - everything comes back and works fine until I turn off the TV / PS 3 and after a few hours - the same problem. I have connected 2 playstations to my TV and the same result - both do the same.
Any Help will be appreciated.

Hello, my name is matt. My e-mail adress is [email protected]. When i turn on my ps3 the screen just go black, i try to hold down the power button and wait for 2 beeps but nothing happens. I also waited over night and tryed again, nothing again. I also checked my cables and everything was ok. My tv was wroking ok and everything. Everything was ok execpt my ps3, i never got a yellow sign. Or i never changed my veiw settings. If you could help me out by messageing me at [email protected] that would be great.
