If I try and copy files from my Rio Carbon to the computer with windows explorer or windows media player it fails. Windows explorer reports data invalid. The files seem protected.

Have already downloaded the MTP toolkit.

? Verify that the USB cable is securely inserted into the USB port on both the Rio Carbon and your computer. ? Connect the USB cable to a USB port on the back of your computer rather than to a USB port on the front of your computer. ? If using a USB hub, connect to a powered USB hub. Unpowered USB hubs may not work. ? Remove USB extension cables from the connection path. ? Disconnect other USB devices. ? Both Windows XP Service Pack 1 (SP1) (or greater) and Windows Media Player 10 (WMP10) must be installed for your computer to detect a Rio Carbon set in MTP mode. ? If you do not want to install SP1 (or greater) and WMP10 on your computer you should disconnect the Rio Carbon and change the Transfer Mode setting to MSC mode. Good Luck

SOURCE: Rio Nitrus MP3 Player

Ok Rio nitrus is great litle thing, and I had the same problem. This is what you should do:

1) download latest firmware for rio nitrus http://www.rioaudio.com/support/rio/downloads/Nitrus/RioNitrus_firmware_123.exe
2) unpack firmware
3) connect Rio Nitrus to your comp;
4)While holding menu buton press power button, you sholud see on display showing UPGRADER text;

5) Then upgrade the firmware ( note that this will erase all the songs- read the read me file that come with firmware);

Although I allready have the same version of firmware v.123 like the one that upgreded this solved the problemm.

SOURCE: error message "failed to connect to player" "data blocked failed"

Don't buy an iPod...
I would recommend wiping and rebooting your player cos it's cheaper:

Windows only.... Please post if you are not using windows...

Open My Computer with your Rio plugged in.
Right click on your Rio player and click on format.
Leave the default values - if it asks you something then use your initiative.
Then click on format.
Then when it has finished formatting go to your firmware (can be downloaded from: http://www.digitalnetworksna.com/support/rio/product.asp?prodID=112).
Follow the instructions and then it should load the firmware onto your player.
When it has done then your player should (in theory!) work properly.

Hope this helps

How to take music off Rio Carbon

I have bad news - I was completely unsuccessful in dragging tracks from the rio to my computer. You can load songs, but you can't "unload" them with the Rio Carbon.

Just in case your computer has capabilities that mine does not, try this:
Double-click "My Computer" on your PC desktop
Double click the Rio Carbon icon
Double click the "Music" folder
Try dragging a single music file from the "Music" folder window to your PC desktop - it will either work, or it will say that it cannot copy the file to the specified location.

Good luck!

How to take music off Rio Carbon

I presume you are using windows...

Go into start,
Then My Computer,
Your Rio carbon should show up as a removable device, double click on it,
Then you should have 2 or more folders: Music and recordings,
double click on music and all of your music will be in there,
you can then just copy and paste it to your documents or other folders as a backup.

Hope this helps

Transferring files via Windows
Explorer (Drag-and-Drop)
In Windows XP (with Windows Media
Player 10 or above installed)
In Windows XP and when Windows Media Player10 is installed, the player is connected to the
computer in MTP mode. In the Windows Explorer, when the player is opened, the “Data” and
“Media” views will be displayed for the player. The Data folder is used to manage data content
on the player, such as text files. The Media folderis used to manage media content supported by
the player for playback, such as mp3 and wma.You can copy files to the player through Windows
Explorer (drag-and-drop). Picture files should be copied to the “Media” folder for viewing while
video files can not be dragged and copied to the “Media” folder directly as only .SMV files are
supported. The video files must be converted and transferred via RCA Video Converter for playback
(refer to page 19). Alternatively, you can transferthe converted video files to the "Data" folder via
the Windows Explorer (drag-and-drop).
You can copy files to / delete files from the player through Windows Explorer (drag-and-drop), but
you cannot open or edit the files directly from the player. If you want to edit the files, you will
need to copy the files from the player to another location (drive) in the system.
I was able to locate the manual for you...It will provide you with more information for your device..I hope this helps...

Rio carbon pearl 6gb

On a windows computer go into my computer and explore your rio carbon folder. In there there should be at least 2 folders - Music and recordings. go into the music folder and all of your files should be there. Delete them all and start putting files on again.

If there are no files showing in the Music folder then go back to my computer and right click on your player and click on format. Accept all of the default values and click format. You will then need to download the firmware for your Rio. This can be downloaded from:
http://www.digitalnetworksna.com/support/rio/product.asp?prodID=234

Once you have downloaded it and your player has finished formatting then load the update by clicking on it and follow the instructions to install it. Once this is done then your player will be completely wiped and you can the start putting music back on it.

Hope this helps,

Rio Carbon 5 g

When Microsoft initiated the DRM system, any Rio Carbon that was hooked into Windows Media Player had the previously working files invalidated. Happened to me as well. The player lasted me three years, and that is about as long as any Mp3 player is going to last we are finding out b/c of all the software snafus.

Rio pearl directory corrupted

first, and this is always good: If available, firmware for the Rio Carbon can be downloaded online. Second, this might be the problem: The Rio Carbon communicates with your computer differently in MTP mode than it does in MSC mode. When in MTP mode, the Rio Carbon cannot display hidden files in folders, cannot allow transfers to the root Rio Carbon directory, and cannot allow the creation of new folders. (Folders can be transferred to the Rio Carbon using drag-and-drop and copy-and-paste methods.) To use traditional folder options, change the Transfer Mode settings to put the Rio Carbon in MSC mode. Last, "..Removing the Rio Carbon from a USB connection before Idle is displayed on the screen may result in a corrupting the player's file system. If for any reason you suspect that your Rio player's file system has been corrupted, reformatting the player will restore the file system to its original state..."
