Expel Air Our coffee machine continually displays "expel air" on the LCD screen. I have tried repeatedly to expel the air as per the instruction booklet but the problem still persists. Any suggestions?

Machine says expel air we followed the instructions and the machine still says expel air

I have the same problem. This machine has broken so many times, and the local dealer is inept, so I became a factory repairman, so Miele would sell me parts. I suspect the water pump is bad this time, since the purging does not work as detailed in the manual, I hear no pumping action. Normally just running the Expel Air routine works fine.

  • Anonymous Nov 14, 2008

    Hi

I have a Miele CVA 620 and it shows Expel Air on LCD screen, but after following the instructions and pushing the hot water button many times, it is still not working.

Do you think it is the water pump?

    thanks

I had the expelair problem with a CVA 620. I ran about 3 full tanks of water through the system trying to shift the air lock but to no avail.

First I cleaned out the brew unit. If you look down the funnel on the top of the brew unit you will see a philips screw in the center of a pierced grating. Remove this screw and carefully remove the grating, Not an easy task as this is at the bottom of the funnel. Behind this grating I found lots of coffee fat that had been blocking the machine. You can remove this fat with a cleaning tablet but removal of the grating will allow you to clean it more thoroughly. I used a small brush and a needle to clean out any blocked holes. Then carefully reassemble the unit.

Cleaning the brew unit didn't in its self remove the air lock but it will improve the future efficiency of the unit.

I contacted Miele and purchased some cleaning and descaling tablets. The machine cost way too much to risk using anything other than Miele stuff and they didn't cost so much. I then carried out a full descale. This takes a long time so make sure you have set a couple of hours aside to do this job. After descaling was complete the readout still said expelair. I then went through the expelair procedure and it worked.

I finished of with a cleaning tablet in the brew unit and still more fat came out. I didn't even know coffee had fat in it!!!!!

The machine is as good as new now and making great coffee. Hope this fix works for you too.

I have the same machine you have to hold the hot water button down and run the steam at the same time. However that is telling you the brass steam valve right above the steam dispenser is going bad.

The vacuum solution did for for me. Our coffe machine was not used for two years. In the last we tried many time to get some water out of it but we had always EXPEL AIR. I used the vacuum cleaner's hose sith a scotch tape around the water dispenser and after 12 times of pushing the hot water buttons the water came out.
Thank you so much. Carl

The vacuum cleaner hose with scotch tape on the water dispenser solution did work for me. I had to press 12 times the hot water button and finally water came out.

    Thank you.

We came across one of the Miele systems thanks to a friend who gave me a call. Got it home and got the "Expel air" message despite many cycles as per the manual. Hooked up the small wet/dry vac (used the crevice tool and tape) to the hot water nozzle and got it primed with one try! Now I'm quite hopeful that a descale and cleaning will bring "Coffee Monster" (my husband's name for the Miele) completely online!
    Thank you!

Expel air is a common problem, but if the manual's method doesn't work, it can mean only one thing, the pump is not working. You should hear the pulsing of the pump while in expel air mode. If not the pump or its circuit is suspect. The parts are SAECO and available without paying Miele's ridiculous markups.

Used vacuum idea. put 2 layers of duct tape over end of crevice attachment of handheld vacuum. Then used ballpoint pen to create a small hole through the duct tape. Then placed steam tube into the hole (after removing the steaming cover). then turned on coffee maker, turned on steam switch (counterclockwise), turned coffee maker switch to "on", and finally pressed "hot water" button. after 5 seconds, hot water came out of both the steam tube and the hot water tube. THANK YOU!

Reason 1: air in the high pressure system
Reason 2: The pump does not work
Reason 3: boiler leakage or other place
Reason 4: The water flow sensor does not work

Even easier solution - take off the steam sleeve outer nozzle; then use your mouth to suck on the nw exposed steam vent (with the power off). Then run the normal expel air procedure.

Took 15 seconds (once we came up with the idea) and solved the problem.

After doing some work on the machine, I found out that a little plasticthing sitting on the brewerunit was broken. If you take a look down into the "arm" on the brewer unit going into the machine. This where the water comes into the brewer unit when the brewer rises this as a part of process.
As said, in the hole here a plasticthing is sitting inside, pushing the ventil was lose.
I can set it in right possision to get my coffe manually, but it only lasts for some cups ....

I will contact the servicedealer to have it replaced....

This is very common problem. Anyone has a suggestion how to get this fixed

  • Anonymous Nov 13, 2011

person above is not a miele tech,,, I am, it is not only a pump. the other possibilities are.... broker wire, broken water path tube or bad seal, broker comm cable between boards, or bad board, i suggest you call only a miele cert co like myself.

I got rid of that msg by using the instant hot side on the left a few times (filled a couple of cups of hot water) and then running the steam test on the frother side until all the water came out & it was just steaming. Now mine says brewunit block and it has never been used... Wonder if I'll ever get my coffee now! Good luck.

My CVA620 machine asks to "expel air " but

keep holding the hot water button down until you get a steady stream of water with no air. if you continue to get the error message after the water comes out, you will need to check the flow meter. if water never comes out, you have a leak inside the machine, a pump issue, or a blockage in the water path. That machine uses the same pump for steam and hot water, so if your steam is working, your pump is probably good. Blockages usually occur from not descaling properly. That machine is prone to leak at the hose fittings. the original o rings were black rubber, and failed fairly early. the replacements are red silicone and last much longer.

My coffee machine cva610 says descale expel air. It won't allow me to make any more coffee.

If you don't have a manual I hope this helps. You can make coffee without "Descale"ing it but it is recommended you don't go too long without doing it.

- Make sure that the filled water container is in the appliance.

- Turn the program selector to "On" with lighting and place a container under the hot water spout and another under the steam spout.

- Press the hot water button, turn the steam selector counterclockwise and dispense hot water until it flows in quiet, continuous streams.

- Press the hot water button again. Turn the steam selector clockwise to o, to turn off the water.

My Miele CVA620 machine announces 'Expel Air,' and

I'm probably to late for this answer, but I will share it anyway.
I got this problem after buying a used CVA620, that had not been used for a while.
To solve the problem i used a breast pump :-)
My wife had this doublepump after the last kid. And I used the hoses that comes with this unit (rubber-like) and connecting them to the hot-water and the steam-nozzles. I started pumping, and pushed the hotwaterbutton. After 5min of pumping and swearing, the job was done. No my CVA works as a charm again :-)
