Ge Smart Shield Water Heater will not light

After my energy company came to turn the gas back on to my condo unit, the technician was unable to light the electric water heater. Before this the hot water was running fine. Now she states that there must be a problem with the water heater because she could not get it to light. I have followed the steps listed on the unit numerous times to no avail.

I think this unit is A/C powered. Check for tripped circuit breaker. Make sure power cord is plugged in.

SOURCE: elec water heater no hot water

Check the breaker to see if the unit is getting power. You will need a voltage meter to check out the thermostat on the unit and also you will need to use it to check if the elements aren't blown. Sounds like the unit isn't getting power but could be the thermostat located under one of the panels on the side of the unit.

SOURCE: gas smell during startup of GE hot water heater

yes, provided there is no excessive build up. The gas and air mix must be right before the mixture will ignit. a household stove will do this each time it's turned on. That's why yhe igniter sparkk hits about three times before it lights. proper venting will confine any fumes to the cimbustion chamber to be carried out the exhaust. If the odor is strong then have the appliance checked for safety sake.

SOURCE: GE Smart Water Heater Model# GE50M6A. Hot water

Hi,
Your bottom element is burned out. You will still get hot water from the top one, but like you said, not nearly as much.
Do a search for "appliance parts" and then enter your model number and you will be able to purchase the aprt online. Check a number of different sites as the prices can vary greatly. Many of these sites will have exploded views, so that you can see how they come apart and go back together. Wire the new element in exactly as you remove the old one. The bottom one will only have two wires so it is very easy.

I hope that this will help you to solve your problem!

Thanks for using Fixya!!

SOURCE: Hot water does not last long.

probably has a bad heating element. May be a little limed up also. Drain the heater and replace the elements. Take a special tool to remove and replace the elements. ( fairly cheap) You can probably get the elements and parts at a good hardware store. The people at the store probably will explain to you how to replace them. Feedback please if this was of help

Energy smart light stays green but no heat

Depends if you have new or old style energy smart.
Generally this can mean the control board is bad.

Link below has contact information for Craftmaster and Whirlpool and some troubleshoot resources:
http://waterheatertimer.org/Whirlpool-Energy-Smart-electric.html

Repairs are funneled through the manufacturer who profits by selling non-generic parts not available from local hardware store... with purpose to end DIY repairs, make more money for manufacturer, and build up network of brand-loyal repair service companies who can sign you up with a repair package ... under the banner of saving you $1 a month in energy cost.
Look at label located on side of water heater to find manufacturer and serial number.

If water heater is within 6-9 year warranty period, then parts are covered, but labor is not.
Manufacturer can send parts and/or refer you to local technician.

2) Control box is probably bad.
There are 2 types of control boxes for older-style energy smart water heaters.
You will need model number and serial number from label on side of tank to order from Whirlpool.

3) This older-type energy smart water heater is probably discontinued by AO-Smith, American, State, Craftmaster, Reliance water heater group that makes Whirlpool and Kenmore water heaters.
New generation energy smart offers interface with home automation and/or non-existent smart grid.
Older energy smart only offered potential interface with non-existent smart grid.

My water heater error code 1 model ee3250rd055v what does this mean

Water heater is not 100% identified.
Unknown if this is gas or electric heater.

Problem posted under Whirlpool water heaters typically made by American water heater company.
Call Whirlpool 877-817-6750.
They will ask for model number and serial number located on label on side of tank.
Call is answered in USA by trained person who can answer specifics about that model, including warranty, age, regular maintenance, error codes, and possible solution for that specific model and serial number.
I have found these folks to be helpful.

Whirlpool manuals do not show that specific model:
http://www.whirlpoolwaterheaters.com/support/manuals.aspx

If you have the energy smart electric water heater with electronic control board, then error code explanation shows on the control board. Error 1 or a single flash, is start-up failure and requires tank to be full of water. Read page 10 of manual. Make sure water heater is full of water and water is coming full stream out of tub spout before turning on power. Also disconnect power from unit, make sure water heater is full, and then reconnect power to see if unit resets.

How can I find out what the Energy Rating is on my Reliance 501 w/h?

Reliance is AO Smith company.
http://www.reliancewaterheaters.com/prod/gas.html
http://waterheatertimer.org/Water-heater-manufacturers.html

1) Reliance does not post the 501 manual any more and I've written and asked for that manual, and they sent generic manual. Model 501 is both gas and electric.

2) That tells me the old energy factor is probably lower than .54 approximately, but it will be even less because energy factors are for new water heaters in perfect operating order under ideal conditions.

3) Energy factor is a measure of how efficiently the water heater turns energy BTUs into hot water.
Gas water heaters have higher energy factor because gas burner has more BTU punch than electric element, and can heat water faster.

4) However, energy factor is not measure of actual cost. It is merely a way to compare giant water heaters with smaller heaters, and gas with electric, without considering cost of heater, installation cost, repair costs, parts costs, life expectation of unit, disposal/recycling cost, or replacement cost.

5) You can improve your true energy factor by buying small cheap heater and maintaining it yourself so it lasts many years beyond manufacturer's warranty.
http://waterheatertimer.org/Replace-anode-rod.html

6) If someone buys a bigger water heater because it has better energy factor, it will not pay back the higher purchase cost. Same size to same size, the difference with higher energy factor is a few dollars per year.
http://waterheatertimer.org/How-to-install-gas-water-heater.html

7) If you have sediment inside of tank, the energy factor is out the window.

I have a Rheem (Paloma) GT199XN tankless water heater. It has worked fantastic since I installed about 5 years ago. Just recently, I have have intermitten issues of the burner not firing up when we turn on...

All costs are energy.
Here's the order of things I would do.

1) Contact Rheem for name of qualified service technician.

2) Call technician who can fix your specific unit, and can educate you about maintenance, and tricks and tips. These guys learn something new each day and are good to have in your rolodex/wallet as tankless unit ages.

3) Download manual, or read manual cover to cover and review maintenance protocol to make sure you're on a schedule for de-liming and other things required for tankless to work.

4) Ask Rheem how you can become familiar with their website pages that show updates and other information that affect your specific unit.

5) Install ordinary tank-type back up that can be put online quickly in case tankless needs parts or frequent maintenance as it ages.

I have a 40 galon GE Smart shield water heater, Model: SH40T12AVH00, Serial # GELN0805V13908. The pilot light is lit but the burner will not stay on for more than 2 secods and then shuts-off.

I believe this unit does not have a standing pilot light and lights each time? Have you reinstalled all doors back into the heater? It sounds like the main burner is blowing the pilot off the thermocouple. You might try replacing the thermocouple. You can download a manual here: http://products.geappliances.com/ApplProducts/Dispatcher?REQUEST=SpecPage&Sku=SG40T12AVH00
