Was every thing oily in the generator? It sounds like you may have lost a bearing in the engine. You definately don't want to spend without finding out where the play is that let it rub. It will do it again. Check and make sure that the rotor isn't loose on the motor shaft. Make sure the bearing housing on the end of the rotor won't let the bearing move around in it.

Did you change the pump with the correct Onan pump, these are special low pressure pumps, and automotive pump will not work and can cause dangerous flooding and carb issues.
The black smoke means it is running rich... Some have had float bowl flooding due to dirt in the fuel that sticks the float needle open overfilling the bowl. Their usual fix is to clean the bowl and the carb and the fuel line.
your going to need to check the carburetor. sounds like your fuel sys is contaminated. when you unplug the fuel solenoid the plunger pops up and cuts the fuel off. the solenoid is used to shut off fuel to keep the unit from back firing
