Lost our manual and can not find out how to get the tomtom to

Announce street names. We can not download upgrades maps or road construction. Ex. We drive to St. Louis Mo. from Mt. Vernon, Il. the main route to our Doctor which is I 40 is closed for construction and our TomTom did not direct us around to the by pass.

To get your TomTom to speak street names, you will need to change the voice from a recorded voice to a computer voice. This can be done by: 

  • Connect your TomTom to your computer
  • When the TomTom asks do you want to connect to the computer, choose Yes
  • Open the TomTom Home application
  • Click on the 'Add Traffic, Voices, Safety Cameras, etc.' button
  • Click on the 'Voices' button
  • Click on the 'Computer Voices' button
You can now select a voice to install on the device. 
Once you have installed a voice, change it by
  • Disconnect the TomTom from your computer
  • Turn on the TomTom
  • Touch the screen to bring up the menu
  • Touch 'Change Preferences'
  • Touch 'Voice Preferences'
  • Touch 'Change Voice'
  • Use the Left / Right arrows to navigate to the voice you just installed (Look for the word 'computer' in the upper right corner by the male/female option)
  • Touch the 'Select' button

if you can find it, let me know...its also possible someone has deleted the computer voices, in that case, youll have to download tomtom home to get them back.

The unit is supposed to announce street names but you may have to go into the settings and turn it on.

I would like to just use my tomtom just to see the road names
Under the change preferences general menu, use the right arrow to go to the 4th page (4/8) and tap the Street Name preferences. Then put a check mark in the boxes Show Street names, Show next Street name, and Show current name on map.
Press Done, twice.
As some menu options may be hidden, the Street name preferences option may be on some other page..

TOm TOm XL 340s and it does not announce street names
hi, it wont announce street names if you have the human voice selected. you must use the computer generated voice du,b as it sounds, thats the way it is.

go tp the change voice option and select a computer generated voice and try again..it should prompt you that you have selected one or the other.

if this fails, let me know and i can give you something else to try

TomTom® XL 330S GPS Receiver street names announced?
your xl will not say street names if its using a human voice, because it can not convert text to speech

you have to use the computer generated voice option to utilize the text to speech feature.

tap the map screen, the go in the preference option, then locate the change voice option.

on my xl its on the 4th page but your 330 may differ slighly.

it probably wont tell you which are computer or human generated, so youll have to experiment.

Gps will not announce street names, highway's, etc. Important note: it had been announcing this data since I bought the GPS in December but just recently stopped doing so.
You have to change the voice to a computer voice. Go to where you choose voices on the main menu Change preferences > Voice preferences > Change voice. Find a voice with the word "computer" in the name and select it. At that point you will be asked what you want to be announced. By the way, this is called "text to speech" in TomTom talk.

is this harman or garmin? if garmin go to garmin web site. you have to join w/user name and all. i think a fee of $25 is required. you can download new maps to a memory card to install on your gps. mike

Speaking the names of major streets
It will only tell you the names of the streets if you use the COMPUTER voice. The other voices will not announce street names. So go to your voice selection and pick the computer voice...either male or female.
