I have loaded Windows XP SP3 onto a 4gb USB thumb drive. I went to load the OS and when I boot to Windows XP installation, it's only showing my USB flash drive as the available HDD to partition and install XP. What can i do to make this work and show my HDD's off an SAS Card?
. Dell POWEREDGE 1950 Server.CIRCA 2006 , 13 YEARS OLD
raid ,no arrays or disk counts stated
no raid card (or chip) type stated, dell or ?
running XP is crazy , XP is viruse magnet
XP is year 2001.
and there are 1000s of SATA and RAID cards /and chips
for same not suportted by XP, nor never will they be.
a hard cold fact of life. why not
run a server OS REAL, OR RUN w7 AT LEAST.
WHY MESS WITH XP.
ITS 2 DECADES OLD 2001 TO NOW. DRIVE A SWORD THROUGH THE cd AND END ITS LIVE.
THE ANSWER IS , well endless but
ok XP INSTALL MEDIAL BOOTS, AND YOU SEE NO ARRAY.
FIRST YOU WOULD ERASE THE ARRAY IN ITS ROM BIOS
AND THE CREATE A FRESH NEW ARRAY, RAID 1 ,2 DISKS?
THIS XP MEDIA BOOTS (USB? OR cd) AND YOU SEE NO ARRAY. VERY NORMAL,!!!!
XP SHOWS HIT F6 KEY
SEE THAT
THAT LOADS THE MISSING RAID CHIP DRIVER OFF FLOPPY DISKETTE,.
sp3 DID NOT ADD MANY NEW MEDIA CHIPS, ONLY A TINY USELESS NOW SET.
THEN AT DELL, GET YOUR RAID CARD(CHIP)
DRIVER FOR xP OOPS ITS GONE
THEY DONT SUPPORT XP, MOST SUPPORT PAGES HAVE NONE, For XP
BUT IF found (lucky you) it must be on a floopy
hit f6 and the array is found
you can buy today usb floopy drives.
some work others dont (hint luck of the china draw)
this server ran , LOST THIS?

if you told the helper what raid card you hand)
or what chip
came with on some models this
Optional PERC 5/i integrated SAS/SATA daughtercard controller
with 256MB cache, PERC4e/DC, PERC 5/e adapter
we cant guess raid card, I like LSI best
but on dell, perc5
if XP for perc 5 is needed google that, luckout.
try to know that servers never run XP
there for no drivers made for that.
run server OS, and now it works.
but im am not doing a www, xp search.l
for this server, for any kind of XP
ever. (xp died in 2014)
and if your license is dead or stolen by others.
MS will not Help you now. zero
A waste of time and effort installing win xp on anything as it is no longer supported by Microsoft and had real problems with drivers for just about everything
install win 10 and it will work
so true and SP3 did add lots of newer SATA raid chips and non raid (pathetic attempts)
but does NOT have 17 years of chips there.
the OP needs to ask your chip maker this.
OP, not one time did you identify the RAID controller, not it's location.nor what MOBO it is?
Raid card? PCI or PCI express
or onboard (mobo) raid,
if you PCI-z the system it tells you what chip it is, with that 1 fact we go to the chip makers side, and see if XP drivers exist.
most DO NOT , most chip makers, ended all XP support ages ago or never ever supported it .
you do know that XP is not a server OS, right?>
its for home usage, or omg xp firmware in ATM machines.
POWEREDGE 1950 Server
shows the onboard, RAID as an option in the sales sheet, 12 long years ago.
IS THIS WHAT YOU HAVE?>
here is the statement from then.
Optional PERC 5/i integrated SAS/SATA daughtercard controller
with 256MB cache, PERC4e/DC, PERC 5/e adapter
so lets play perc 5/i (xp) games
that is there chip, only, so only there drivers work.
Windows Server 2008 x86
W2K8 x64
and more lets go to dell.com and look for you.
I click your server.
I click drivers
I click storage
I will pretend you said, integrated perc5/i not the adapter card
this is all Dell supports on that chip , period
if you don't believe it ask them,we are not dell.
here is bright IDEA
get w10 off MS.com site, free,
it runs for 30days
some times w10 has driver , that nobody has.
infact the first page will tell you if it works
get the latest ISO w10 ok? not old 2015 w10 ever.
if it shows up here. its supported,
but will need to be configured in BIOS raid
as the dell apps to do that are not w10 good.http://www.pcdied.com/partition-kill2.JP...
w8.1 and server 2012 are sister OS.
so the 2012 can run in w8 up. try it.
server 2008 matches w7, never go lower than w7 ever, ok? load w7 and it will find, raid, if it likes the server 2008 driver w7 has,it has, on the install disk.ok. XP is dead, drive the vampire stake through is nasty heart.
while chanting (Ubuntu rules) to the tune of the greatful dead.

During the Windows XP setup you will need to provide the RAID driver using a pre-formated floppy disk.
Windows will ask you if you want to provide additional drivers and give you the key combination to use to do that.

ya ! when you boot from usb drive and there is no win xp in the boot drive then how you would imagine that it detect OS....?
SOURCE: Windows won't see all of my 4GB of RAM but BIOS does! Why?
Its simple you must have the system in OS install Mode, for some legacy OSs they can only install with 256 Max RAM.
The setting is in the BIOS or setup. its easy to find and its called OS Install Mode
SOURCE: Unable to boot to anything external.
Save yourself some trouble. Pull a CD/DVD drive out of another computer or just buy one. They are very cheap. Connect the CD/DVD drive to the server and install the OS as usual.
If you are lucky WS2008 will already have a compatible SCSI/RAID driver. Otherwise, you will need to press F6 and install the driver from the floppy.
If this helps please vote for my solution.

You will also need to download the Dell install/upgrade disc for your 2950. You can reach the correct page by going to support.dell.com and entering the service tag found on the front right corner of your server. Download the ISO and burn. Boot from this disc and insert your OS DVD when prompted. This will pre-load the Dell Perc-5i driver into the Windows installer for you. Be sure to create your disk array first in the controller's firmware!
