My HP Laserjet 2200D doesn't print black backgrounds. I am using Ubuntu.
Try using the November 2008 Driver...
HP LaserJet 2200D Linux Driver
Has it ever printed correctly or did it just start malfunctioning?
Is it connected via LPT, USB, or Ethernet?
Do you have the HP Toolbox intalled on Ubuntu? If not, it can be found in the Synaptic Package Manager.
I'm suspecting there issue with the post-script format... (e.g. RAW format) But it could be many things; need more info.
This is the open source website for HP Linux Printing:

HP also has a support hotline for linux:

I'm sure they've encountered every printer anomaly...
