The mower ran fine until the muffler bolt came loose and allowed the vane air choke system to become disengaged from the thermostat. I reattached them but am having all types of issus with trying to start it and i cant keep it running. Is the thermostat on a push mower a true thermostat? It looks like just a piece of metal with a spring. Maybe when the muffler moved it over heated the thermostat and now it needs to be replaced?
The "spring" thermostat is a special spring, its made of special wire and set at a specific spring rate... if its damaged, over heated. by the muffler, etc.. replace it...

Sounds like a common fuel problem you need to remove carb & fuel tank and unless you can get a compressor they need a good blast out you may even take carb apart & check diaghram they have very small jets in fact most lawnmower shops have a sonic bath for this
SOURCE: Troy Bilt Self Propelled quits running also
clean out the float bowl on the carb sounds like you have gunk in the carb

1) Common problem when a mower sits for several weeks at a time between mowing;
check for extra grass debris to be glogged between the blade and the mower shell.
2) If the mower has a 'bail' or 'zone' control handle;
this releases a brake mechanism on the flywheel to allow it to rotate, and after it is running, releasing the lever will 'kill' the engine.
NOTE* when transporting a push mower in the trunk of a car, try to keep the mower as level as possible.
*extra note when mower has been transported in the back of a car;
sometimes the mower is placed in a trunk at such a severe angle that the oil from the crankcase is forced around the rings and sits on top of the piston so that when you try to pull the rope you have a 'hydra' lock. (that is when a liquid is between the piston and the spark plug) You cannot compress a liquid, so the rope appears stuck.
If this happens, remove the spark plug (make sure the loose plug wire is fastened away from any combustable that comes out of the spark plug hole *** AND THERE WILL BE A HUGE STREAM OF OIL AND GASOLINE, SO BE PREPARED TO CLEAN UP A MESS ***
pull as normal until fluid is dispelled from internal engine
clean or replace the spark plug
a few more pulls (no choke required) and you are up and going

About the only suspect is water in the fuel - even after you drained it. If your Masport has a 'Quantum' style engine with a float type carb, undo the bowl nut and allow the float chamber to drain. Odds on there's water in it. A single drop will block the jet. If it's a 'carb-on-the-tank' engine, chech for water droplets in the bottom of the tank. They wll be obvious if present.
