Take whichever cable/wire that runs from your modem, that should be the first electronic device in the line from your incoming internet service, that would be the main line from whatever your source is be it phone line, cable, or satellite. Plug into the appropiate jack on the back of the computer.
Main incoming line/cable, ----->modem,-------> ethernet cable-------
---------->computer

With the router hooked up getting on the internet is slow. hooked to cable one direct it's o.k.

Your Wireless speed is all down to the quality of the router and wireless card, and where you are in relation to the router.
Hooking up direct is always going to be faster.
You could experiment with the position of the router in the room.
Check your speeds wired and wireless, use www.speedtest.net.
You could buy a better antenna for the router

Cant get it hooked up to the internet directly or wireless

If you had it connected by wire, check the side of the computer for a switch. This will torn on your wireless connection.

I have a sony vaio VGN-FZ430E for a year now. It is set up on a new printer, a lexmark X4690 wireless. Right now we don't have wireless internet so we have to computer hooked up to a non-wireless network....

If you're on a wired network now and the Printer used to be on a wireless network, your computer may not know where to print to anymore. You might want to try uninstalling the printer in full and then reinstalling it making sure to do it directly connected to the computer you want to print from.

I have Time Warner Cable for internet and Vontage cable for my phone thru my internet. I'm trying to connect a Linksys router for my wireless laptop. I also have a Netgear switch connected to Time Warner...

If you purchased a Linksys wireless roter then you shoul not need the switch anymore-
Try going directly from your time warner modem into the Interner/WAN port on the router and then plug your desktop computer and the vontage phone system into 2 of the ports on the router. After everything is hooked up you will probably need to power cycle for it all to work correctly.
Please power cycle in this order:

Reboot modem - then Router- then Vontage phone system.

Hope this helps

Want to hook laptop up to home computer via cable modem

You need a router or a wireless router to do that.
If your cable modem is wireless you can set directly via wireless network a connection with your laptop (the laptop also need a wireless card (if dont have any built in))
The connection must be done in this way

ISP ----->> Cable Modem ---->> Wireless Router o Router ----->> Computer ( 1, 2, or more)

Hooking up to docking station

No, the laptop will have to have a wireless adaptor on it or in it to connect. The docking station is only good when the computer is hooked into it.

Stopped connecting to the internet

What kind of connection do you have? (Cable, DSL, etc.) Post an ipconfig /all result (Run, cmd, ipconfig /all) Delete your current connection and re-create it.
