I was running this drive as a boot drive but after a short time the laptop would start shutting down suddenly. I removed the drive and put the old one back in and formatted the travelstar to run as a second drive in the laptop. Everything was fine for about a week and today it started shutting down suddenly

SOURCE: Drive Being Recognized as Removable Disk
Same issue with my 500 GB TFD500U16. A little more description is that my PC is detecting the power when turning on the drive and the HDD itself is spinning up. Also the Blue light that normally indicates HDD activity by turning Red no longer shows activity but just stays Blue. This indicates that the data side of the HDD is not seated properly. Since mine is out of Warranty, I took it apart and found this to be the exact case.
! ! ! ! Please perform this at your own risk ! ! ! ! Especially if your warranty is still in effect! ! ! By loosening the HDD mounting screws inside that will allow the connection to seat properly and data to be seen.

Start with a boot disk. run a scandisk to find any errors, then try using fdisk to reconfigure your partitions, enabling you to format. this has worked for me in the past with desktop pcs.

You can buy an adaptor that will connect your hard drive to a pc.
Ribbon cable from your secondary drive on pc goes into the adapator. Adaptor also coonects to laptop harddrive.
You also need to change from being a master driveto be a slave drive . see linkbelow.

You can then copy file to pc a usb memory stick.
SOURCE: oven won't heat and shuts down after approx. 20 seconds
If
it stops after 22 seconds, that means the controller has detected a
problem, usually a problem with the inverter or a bad magnetron.
Due to the lethal
voltages used and produced in inverters, I do not recommend that an
inexperienced person work on these.
