Can you charge it from the cigarette lighter cord? I'm thinking some GPS will neither charge nor run from a USB power source. Garmin, I believe, uses USB only for updates, not as a power supply.
If you want to know how to charge your GPS unit using your computer you can do this by simply connecting your GPS to your computer using the USB cord that should have been included with your unit. It will be a black cord with one end that should fit a USB port on your computer, and the other end will attach to the back of your GPS. Turn off your unit, then plug the smaller end into the GPS and the larger end into a USB port on your computer. Your GPS should then come on by itself. Your normal Garmin startup screen will display, and it will also display that it is loading maps. Then a graphic of a computer connected to a GPS will show on the bottom of the screen, and a white line the width of your screen will slowly change to green. The entire time you are connected your GPS will be charging. Depending on how much of your battery needs to be charged, leaving it connected for about an hour and a half should give you a full charge.
To charge a garmin nuvi gps with your computer you connect your satnav to the computer's usb port using a mini USB lead. Turn on the computer and the satnav and the satnav will begin to charge. It will take approx 8 hours to charge compared to 4 using a car charger or mains charger.
Yes, you can plug your GPS device into your USB port to charge it. Your computer (if running) will assume you are connecting the GPS device to your computer, and It will start up the program for your GPS device... e.g. to update the map, backup the data, etc. You can proceed to do all that, or ignore those programs. While it is plugged into the USB port on your computer, it will charge your GPS battery. You may wish to "disconnect" the GPS device (properly), but still leave it connected ... to continue charging it.
Another way to charge the GPS device is to get a wall plug USB adapter. This way, you can charge the GPS battery without having to go through the complexity of what the computer does when you plug the USB cable into it.
I have just got a Nuvi 1300 and have plugged into my computer with the Nuvi switched off. A little icon (showing GPS unit and computer) shows on GBS screen and unit starts to charge. I reckon about 3 hours to fully charge. You have to unplug GPS though to see battery status.
Martin. U.K.
TRY SWITCHING GPS OFF WHILE CONNECTED. IF NOT DOWN LOAD NEW SOFTWARE AND WHEN FINISHED IT LEAVE CONECTED SHOULD SHOW CHARGING AND YOU WILL BE ABLE TO USE
Very simple: connect the cable that came with the GPS: USB end to computer, mini USB to the GPS. When the unit is charging, the battery icon will disappear.
Unfortunately, Garmin did not think you would want to know the percentage of charge completed (they confirmed it to me in email), so you have to guess that after 2-4 hours your GPS is fully charged.
Make sure the internal battery is charged by connecting it to your computer with the included USB cable. Make sure the computer is on and running. Let it charge at least a couple of hours and then try to turn the GPS on while still connected to the computer. If the unit still will not turn on you might need to return it to Garmin.
It take a day to charge the 260 WITH the correct cable for your computer as it will only trickle charge it. Car charge does it in 2 - 3 hrs. If car is not charging it check the fuse in the end of the charger And:

There are three ways to charge the internal battery in your automotive GPS
unit.1
Use the provided vehicle
power cable that came with your GPS unit. The unit will charge while
powered on and using the device as well as when the GPS unit is powered
off and plugged into a running vehicle.
Use an AC power
adaptor. Some units come with this power cable to plug the GPS unit
into a wall outlet allowing the GPS unit to take a charge. For units
that do not come with this cable, one can be purchased from Garmin's online store.
For most units, the final way
of charging the battery is to plug the GPS into a powered on computer with
a USB cable2. This
method of charging will be a trickle charge and it may take longer than
the other two options, however it will still charge the battery. A
USB cable is provided with a few GPS models. For those that don't come
with this cable, one can either be ordered from the online
store or you can use a standard USB to mini-USB cable that fits the
unit and plugs into your computer.
1 - Please note that temperature can play an effect on
the charging of a device. If the battery registers a temperature of 0°C and
below or 45°C and above (32°F and 113°F
