Re: Does not startup or boot, displaying a blank screen
If u see led indicators blinking showing hard disk and cpu working then ur IO controller in motherboard need to be replaced. If no cpu or hdd activity, ur RAM might not be working.

It miight be the backlight for this unit. It all depends on whether the screen came with the backlight. There is a remote chance that the display circuitry on the motherboard is faulty too. Try to plug a monitor into the VGA port and check to see if it is dim there too.
Read this article and see if it applies to you. There's a special phone number for HP in the article. If this is your problem, you might be able to get a free repair. Good luck.
If you need to send your PC out for service I would highly recommend CompUSA in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. You can contact them 954-565-1189. This is not the old CompUSA, but one of the stores bought out by Tigerdirect.com last year. Their technical staff is fantastic and very knowledgible and they have very fair prices. I would first try a couple of things first, though. First, do you hear the fan(s) or hard drive start up and do any lights come on at all? If so, try holding down the F10 key and push the 'on' button. Continue holding down the F10 key until the 'Compaq' screen comes up. You should then get a screen that allows you to choose 'Last known configuration that worked'. (Use the arrow keys and enter button as your mouse won't work on this screen.) If this works, Windows should now boot normally. Go immediately to and 'right click' on My Computer. Go down and 'left click' on Properties. Choose the 'Hardware' tab, then click on 'Device Manager'. Do you see an exclaimation mark next to any listing? If so - right click on that device and choose 'update driver' then just follow the default choices. If you have no signs of life (no lights or sounds) when you try to start the PC, it's probably a bad power supply (inside) & that probably means a new main board. If you get lights and sounds (fans, etc.) like it's running normally, but you can't see the screen, it may need a new 'back-light bulb or new screen - probably cheaper than replacing PC.
