How do I diagnose Farmall Class C starting problems?

My Class C Farmall tractor has been sitting all winter, and it is time to put it to work. It turns over plenty fast, and it seems there is gas going to the carburetor. But it never fires. I am definitely not a mechanic, but I am willing to try anything. Where do I look to solve this problem? What kind of diagnostic can I do? Carburetor? Electrical? Any ideas on what to look for will be appreciated. Thanks, jay

Take a plug out connect the HT lead to it and ground the body to see if there is a spark
spark ok go to carby
no spark look at ignition switch , wiring coil , distributor , points , condenser
carby , -drain the fuel from the bowl and clean out the main jet
check for fuel from the needle and seat, check that the tap is passing fuel and not corroded inside and the fuel lines are not blocked

I have a 1957 farmall A. It is in very good shape and normally starts right up, however. I was attempting to start it after the winter season and the starter just seem to quit after the engine didn't start...

The brushes have more than likely failed in the starter. You can try using a set of VERY "heavy duty" jumper cables directly to the armature side of the starter solenoid making sure the tractor is out of gear. (Ground anywhere on the engine positive to the aramture lead nut) If you get the same hum.... it is time to either get a new set of brushes or replace the starter. Just make sure there are 2 people present so if the positive lead welds itself to the starter someone can disconnect the other end from the battery.

Thanks for using FixYa.

I have a farmall M. that i can hardly turn this winter. it was ezy to turn this summer. is there a steering gear box that might be low on oil?

It could be that the grease stiffens in winter.

Speak to the supplier, it might be a common problem and therefore a simple answer ( e.g. replace the grease with a lighter type).

1942 farmall tractor stalls after 10 - 15 minutes of bushhogging.

Hello, W/D here.

It might have to do with your temp or it could be a fuel issue. I had a model "B" (1947) and it sometimes pulled a slight vacuum on the tank, starving it for fuel, and it took about that long. If you have the glass sediment bowel on yours, you should be able to see evidence of this if it is happening, or if you have a vent in your filler cap, it might be plugged. I don't know how a model H tank is vented, but I'm sure that you do.
As to it being temp related; it could be. You can remove and test your thermostat by immersing it in hot boiling water and seeing if it opens. It probably has it's temperature rating printed on the thermostat. If you believe that this is the issue, a lower opening thermostat can be installed to see if this corrects the problem
Good luck, and best regards, --W/D--
