SOURCE: Cannot transfer video to Laptop computer through USB

I bought my JVC GR-270 (same as GR-290, but no remote) in 2004. On page 45, top right hand column of either manual (the original and the on-line one on this site) the claim is made that "Using USB cable it is possible to do the following things: Transfer still/MOVING images recorded on a tape to a PC." After many unsuccessful attempts at trying to use the USB cable for transferring moving images to my PC, I called JVC technical dept. They told me that the MANUAL WAS WRONG....and that in order to transfer MOVING images, I needed to purchase a FIREWIRE cable. Indeed, that is the solution. However, If your PC has no FIREWIRE input jack you must also purchase a FIREWIRE adapter card. Don't skimp on these items, get a well shielded cable and a name brand adapter.
What burns me is that I looked at the manual in the store and only purchased the camera because it claimed that the enclosed USB cable would work for moving images. JVC denies responsibility, even though their manual is clearly wrong, and they know it.

SOURCE: Using Windows Movie Maker

Windows Movie Maker is pretty picky about file formats. You might want to use Pinnacle Studio. This way once you plug your computer in and turn it on Pinnacle will capture the video for you which is something that Movie Maker was never designed to do.

SOURCE: Transferring video files from the JVC Everio GZ-MG21U to PC (Windows XP)

ok....first off i feel your pain i got this camcorder for christmas last year and to my disapointment it took me days to figure this out.
there are several ways to do this but personaly i use this method and ill warn you now it includes a tiny bit of jargon.

1.plug in the camcorder

2.select "Play back on computer" on the camcorder menu

3.when the computer finds the camcorder it will find two hard drives, one ending in SD and one ending in HDD.

4.click the one ending in HDD (The one ending in SD will open up a folder containing your photos taken on the camcorder)

5.open the file named SD_VIDEO

6.now heres where it gets tricky, open the a file that should be named PRG007 the number on the end defines the more recent project you have filmed (Say if you filmed yesterday your data would be in PRG007 but if you filmed today it would most probably be in a new folder named PRG008.

7.now you going to see all you files .TOD is the camcorders own video file and .MOI is the thumb nail the camcorder uses during play back, select all of the files you want with the .TOD extension and COPY not cut COPY them to your desired location.

8.now you have you files that windows wont play because it doesnt recognise them, you now have to go through every file Right click>Rename>Highlight ".TOD" and type/replace it with ".avi">Click "Yes" if a little box pops up.

9. Your files should now be playable if they dont play straight away its because they have a large file size so if and when media player just shows a black screen click the stop button on the player, wait for it to do its stuff and then click play.

This can be a long painfiull thing to do but ive done it a few times now and after the first few it becomes natrual, easier and faster than the folowing method. wich contains almost no jargon but takes alot of time

1. Follow steps 1&2 from the last tutorial.
2. Install the disk that came with the Camcorder.
3. Install both programs, one is for viewing your footage quickly and one is for editng.
4. Open the program named "Powerdirector express" create a new project File>New
5. Click the tab near the top named "LOAD MEDIA" a little pic of an open file
6. Nvigate to your files using steps 4 to 6 from that last tutorial.
7. Higlight all of the files u want and import them.
8. After a long time it should have loaded them into the project library.
9. Drag them into the timeline editing any that are to long or add any cheap effects if you choose. i wouldnt.
10. Highlight the whole time line and click the tab at the top named "PRODUCE".
11. You probably want to "Create a file" if you dont your on your own.
12. Heres how to "Create a file", change your output directory on the left hand side. and click next.
13. Chose the avi method (Better compatability and speed).
14. Now the rest is up to you to play around with the settings to suit what you want to do next but make sure you click and search around all of the buttons available and ensure any quality settings are set to the highest and any aspect ratio settings are set to 16:9.

Enjoy the camcorder, after you get used to it you will love it.

I need to uninstall the all in one kodak printer softwarebut keep getting a 'system error at runtime 8193' message. How do I get around that?

A runtime error is a software or hardware problem that prevents a program from working correctly. Runtime errors might cause you to lose information in the file you're working on, cause errors in the file (corrupt the file) so you can't work with it, or prevent you from using a feature. Unlike stop errors, runtime errors don't typically cause Windows or a program to stop working.
Here are few steps that you may try in order to fix the issue.
a. Turn off the all-in-one printer and, if connected via USB, remove the USB 2.0 cable.
b. Remove KODAK AiO Home Center Software from your computer.
NOTE: Select Control Panel > Programs and Features.
c. Reinstall the latest software for your printer.
I. Locate and select the software download for your printer.
II. Follow the instructions to install the software.
d. Reconnect the USB cable when prompted during the installation.

In everio media browser i try to change the "library destination" settings to point to a network drive but get the message "invalid destination respecify a different folder". Are network destinations...

No, they're not allowed, but I've found you can change it manually in the registry. Always be careful changing the registry. Mistakes can break Windows!
First, make sure the network share is mapped to a drive letter:
  1. Open "My Computer".
  2. Open the "Tools" menu and select "Map Network Drive...".
  3. Select a drive letter (eg. "V:" for video), type the path to the network video folder (eg. "\\Server\Videos"), and press "OK".
  4. You should now have a drive letter showing exactly what's in your network video folder.
  5. Create a folder on the network share to receive the videos (eg. "V:\Everio MediaBrowser").
Next, modify the Everio MediaBrowser settings.
  1. Open the Windows "Start" menu and press "Run...".
  2. Type "regedit" and press "OK".
  3. Navigate to: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ Software\ PIXELA\ Everio MediaBrowser\ IMXLIBRARY
  4. Double-click the "SAVEPATH" entry, change the value to a path using the drive letter you created above (eg. "V:\Everio MediaBrowser"), and press "OK". This folder must exist, so create it if you haven't already
  5. Select the "SAVEPATH2" entry and press "Delete". This prevents MediaBrowser from deciding a local drive is a better destination.
  6. Close the program.
Now you can download video into the library on the network.
  1. Plug in your camcorder.
  2. Select "Playback on PC".
  3. When MediaBrowser starts, press Backup at the bottom of the screen.
  4. Select the volumes to backup and press "Next".
  5. MediaBrowser should now say the destination is the network drive. Press "Next".
I have not attempted to import existing videos from a network share yet. That could be another challenge.

I get this error everytime I try and use IE I can't use IE it wont launch runtime error! program:c:\program files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe this application has requested the runtime to...

you can try to re-install IE, go to control panel then open Add/Remove programs, on the left side of the Add/Remove programs applet click Add/Remove windows components, under Components look for internet explorer then uncheck it then click next, IE will now be uninstalled. Then reinstall it, just like previous process on Add/Remove windows components put a check on internet explorer then click next.

If this wont solve the problem, you can try a third party browser like firefox, download firefox on this site: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/, after downloading firefox just double-click it then just follow the installation.
