Tried convergance, but would work

I have a convergance problem (red and blue are both offset). I tried going into the convergance menu, but the crosshairs won't move. Am I doing something wrong or do is the problem minor or severe?

Also replaced STK392 150's and the digital convergence won't move according to remote control. When I press the directional keys on the remote the screen just flashes instead of moving the color lines.

the colors wouldn't align on the screen and even doing the perfect focus it didn't help so i had the chips replaced in it for 120$ at my house and now the tv works just fine. which is great for me because somebody just gave it to me because they couldn't figure out what was wrong with it, so i got the tv for about 120$.

I have a yellow stripe at the top going across the tv and the a bright blue stripe under it. The words on the tv also have a double image and use these blue and yellow colors. the stripes are not solid stripes, but curves and also miss small sections from being a complete stripe. Please help me figure out how to fix this, my warranty just ran out, of course. Thanks

  • tomkitty Feb 13, 2008

After the magic focus button is reset, the number 4 shows up. The colors on the tv are a blue stripe across the top followed by a yellow stripe, lettering is out of focus showing double images, lots of blue and yellow smeared it appears. Please help get my tv realigned. This is a Hitcahi 53 inch projection tv.

Probably need to replace the convergence ICs inside the TV. The Ic is about 2" x 3" and mounted on large aluminum heatsink. Usually 2 or 3 (depends on model)

If your convergence setting will not adjust the picture you need to replace the Convergence amps. A repair shop will do this for $200-$300 depending on your area.

I found out why the crosshairs won't move. The replacement Sanyo convergence IC's was bad STK392-150. I had another spare generic STK392-150, and it worked for half of the beams. Awaiting another STK392-150 to arrive.

Reccomend using a tech but try looking around for the best price.

Change your convergence cartridges and check your resistor specially the fusible ones and all low values.. a small change in value can prevent any automatic convergence circuits from operating Robertinmiami

The divergence is messed up and it looks like I'm watching a 3D movie without glasses and its permanent

It looks like a Panasonic? not real bad but off, you might if have the original remote try to go into the menu for Convergence and see if the several crosses that can be called up will adjust---looks like red is offset some but might be adjustments
if the red or blue will not adjust enough or at all in some direction the two chips the set uses would have to be replaced, if its panasonic I have instructions for those---tell you everything you will need and how to do it--YOU will NEED a working Panasonic remote to see if set will adjust or not and after replacing the parts to adjust.

Let me know the model/brand and if you can solder or what? Soldering is involved if the chips are bad and need to be replaced.

18 pins on each chip Your video looks like the red is offset to the right on the left side of the screen. the chips may not need to be replaced if the convergence adjustment in the customer menu will move the red to the left in that area.

The screen looks as if it is 3D. The colors are all offset.

Projection TV sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the video to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the TV menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

This is a very common failure on these projection sets and a fairly simple DIY fix. All projection sets including Samsung, RCA, Sony, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Pioneer, Akai, GE, JVC, Toshiba, and others at some point will have the same problem.

Common Symptoms include....
  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
  • TV shuts off after powering on. Power light will blink. TV may also make a chirping noise.
Here are some photos of convergence problems.

Here is a quick test....

Using your original remote go-to the settings menu then goto the convergence section.

Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.

You should be able to move RED and BLUE in all directions - up, down, left, and right. And you should be able to get the grid straight.

If you can't move them in all directions or cant move them far enough your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.

Note: If you TV has as flash focus or magic focus button only try pressing the button. If it fails to fix the convergence your need to fix it. See below for a fix

You will need to replace the convergence chips and possibly some convergence resistors and pico fuses.
This is a a fairly easy DIY job if you are handy and can follow directions. You can get complete repair kits from TvRepairKits.com or click here. They have put together DIY repair kits that include the OEM parts and step by step photo instructions for each repair. If you are not handy or can't follow directions we would suggest calling a shop.
