In time as the Sony Trinitron ages it begins to have power issues. While this can be true of most tube televisions it's the rate and severity at which this happens to Trinitrons that makes it particularly of note. Many Trinitron owners have complained of the Trinitron set turning itself off randomly and frequently. Some sets have failed to stay on for longer than a few minutes at a time. Eventually some sets will not turn on at all. These problems grow more severe with age.
Check the power cable running from the Sony Trinitron 32. Make sure the cable is completely inserted into the power connection on the rear of the TV as well as the local power outlet.
Disconnect the power cable from the electrical outlet, then plug it into a different connection. It is possible to electrical outlet has died, forcing you to obtain a power current from a different source.
Check the cable connection running from the cable/satellite receiver or VCR. If the TV is on but no picture is on the screen, the problem is most likely due to a connection issue.
Power off the cable/satellite receiver, then press the "Video" button on the remote control to switch the Trinitron 32 to the video input signal. Turn on the cable/satellite receiver and the programming now loads onto the television screen.
The TV stays in standby because protection circuit kicked in.
Protection kicks in when an internal fault had been detected.
In your case the SCART cable may have caused a short.
When on protection the TV will stay in standby, will not respond to buttons or remote, and will not start up. All higher voltages from PSU get shut down by controller board, and only the +5V remains on.
To attempt resetting the TV, disconnect all video cables, disconnect the power cord, wait about one hour and plug it back.
If TV does not restart, then there may be an internal fault.
In that case leave TV unplugged for longer, just in case.
If still no luck, then call Sony to discuss a repair. The number is listed on your owner manual.
If instead TV will restart, do not use the faulty video cable again, this can damage your TV.
