When powering up camera message appears in window 'this card connot be used
This is an old post but still a current problem that nobody has solved yet. I am having the same problem.
Coolpix L5 has been working just fine. Don't use it much because smart phone cameras are more convenient.
Dusted the camera off and inserted a 4Gb sd card after formatting it on a computer and get this message after a few minutes. Camera won't allow me to access menu to format the card.
The camera will work just fine with internal memory (only 8mb though)
Tried several sd cards that I have and they all have the same problem. My computer has no problems with the cards.
I have formatted the card in my laptop computer (Windows 7 pro) as ntfs, fat 32, fat, and exfat - same problem.
With the sd card removed so I can get to menu, I reset camera settings.
Also, each and every time I take the card out - I am effectively rebooting the camera because the battery cover has to come off.
Camera still won't read the card!
SOOOOO, re-formated the card again as ntfs, this time unchecked the quick format check box to give the sd card a thorough formatting. Still won't read the card! I think it is time to retire this dinosaur.
Either the card is not supported or it needs formatting
Hi, your camera uses SD card to store pictures. Most current computers have SD card readers/writers so you can use you card on a computer to save any pictures left on the card and format it using windows. Than put it back to your camera and format it again to prepare it to be ready for new pictures. Good luck!

my camera says "this card cannot be used" when I power up. I have tried other cards I used previously in the camera and it says the same thing. How do I change the format of the card or camera?
