You have to answer the hone to recieve the fax

make sure you have a phone line plugged in correctly (into the in plug) and set the printer / fax to recieve auto. Do not pick up the phone while recieving the fax, If thei does not work, check your setting in the software.

Are you sharing your home phone line with your fax? If so, do you have a voicemail or an answering machine connected in the same line?

If you have an answering machine connected to the same line as the fax, set the answering machine to answer incoming calls before the printer does. Increase the number of rings by a factor of 3 over the answering machine. For example, if the answering machine is set to pick up on 4 rings, set the printer to pick up on 7 rings.

If you have a voicemail feature in the same line as the fax, you may subscribe from your phone service provider for a distinctive ring pattern feature. You can program your printer to have a distinctive ring pattern and phone number for incoming faxes.

Is there a dial tone if you pick up the reciever ? Can you send faxes or use the machine to make a phone call ? If you can make calls or send faxes the machine probably needs to be set to the auto recieve mode so that it automatically answers when a fax is being recieved. If no dial tone you may have a loose connection to your phone jack.

If your telephone service offers ditictive rng you can order another number and your line will ring differently and you can set you G3 Fax to answer the distinctive ring and you regular call will be picked up by the answering machine.

The machine is set with the sleep mode as a default. The fax part can be changed to recieve a fax by pressing the fax mode button. Press it until it says Fax only, not F/T. F/T means Fax/Telephone. This mode would make it to where you have to pick up the reciever and press start when a fax comes in. The Fax only mode means it will pick up everytime a fax comes in automatically. when you using fax you better shut off answering machine

If all else fails try the manual mode:(Press Receive Mode to select
FAX ONLY, FAX/TEL,TAD:ANSWER MACH. orMANUAL.)

Manual Reception
1 Pick up the handset while the phone is ringing.
2 Press Fax Start if you hear fax tones (beeps).
3 When the LCD shows RECEIVING, replace the handset.
(best used when you are expecting a fax and know that the incoming call is a fax)

If you are like most people you probably also have a phone with an answering machine or voicemail setup on your home phone. If this is the case you may want to set the reception made to
TAD:ANSWER MACH.

Okay for starters, you need to check to see if that fax machine is automatically answering the phone when it rings. you can check to see if it is trying to recieve by call that phone number from another phone and listen if it answers and when it does, does it make a high pitched squelling sound that varies in pitch.
if it does then it should be working ok, if not then you must program your recieve mode to automatically answer.
you can also check to see if it's sending by doing the opposite: put a sheet of paper in the machine to fax and dial your cell phone or other number, when it rings pick it up and listen for the high pitch squeel, if it works then your fax is working properly.

if you have the fax-575 there should be a TAD setting.

This is the setting you would use if you're using an answering machine on the same phone line as your fax machine.

To set the Recieve Mode :

Press Recieve Mode. The LCD display shows your current selection.

Continue to press Recieve Mode until your new selection appears. After 2 seconds the screen returns to the date and time display, along with your new Recieve Mode setting.


The 4 Recieve modes are Fax Only, Fax/Tel, TAD:Answering Machine, Manual.

Recieving faxes

• Plug a regular, non-digital, phone into the fax's phone line and see if you get a dial tone
  • If you do not have a dial tone, seek support from your telephone service provider
• Dial the fax number from a phone    
  • Normal circumstance is that you will have the fax machine pick up and make high-pitched noises
  • If the fax does not pick up, put a regular phone on the fax line and see if the regular phone rings when dialed
    • If the phone rings, answer it and see if there is line noise
      • If the line is clear, call the service number listed on your fax
      • If the line is staticy or unclear, call your telephone service provider
    • If the phone does not ring, call your telephone service provider

Sending faxes

• Attempt to dial the fax number you are trying to send to from another phone.
  • If you hear electronic noises on the line, the other end has a fax machine on the other end
    • Check to see if you can recieve faxes.
  • If the remote fax does not answer, the problem is on the remote side, contact the recipient
