The symptom that you are feeling is that your transmission is not fully engaging correctly. Basically you have a few different things to try depending on the trans that is on your machine. Drain the fluid and re-install new fluid, adjust your brake/clutch to make sure that you are fully disengaged and fully engaged when you release the pedal. If none of those 2 cure your issue then you are looking at a trans rebuild or replacement
SOURCE: won't engage blades to cut lawn
Is the belt on the pulleys ? If so your cable is broke its what engages deck belt
SOURCE: craftsman 42" riding lawn mower blade free spinning but wont cut
It sounds to me that you need a new mower deck drive belt, or your blades need sharpening. If the blade edges are rounded, they won't cut butter... Also, when mower is off, check mower deck drive pulleys to make sure you don't have any that are locked up or are dragging. You can check this by pulling the belt away from pulley and spinning the pulley by hand. MOWER MUST BE OFF before attempting any of these checks. You would be surprised how many people would try this with the mower running.
Hope this helps

SOURCE: when I mow with my 42
Hello:
This is Usually Caused by Worn Blades or a Bad Mandral/Blade Spindle Bearing.
Remove the Deck from Under the Mower.
Remove the Deck Belt.
Check the Mandrals/Blade Spindles for Bad Bearings. Do the Sound Rough when you Spin the Pulleys by Hand? Can you Move the Mandralls/Blade Spindles from Side to Side? If Yes, then the Bearing s Require Replacing.
Look At the Tips of the Cutting Edge of the Blades. You will Se the Tips are Rounded and Not Square. This Condition will cause the Strip in the Center of the Deck.

The blade cuts fine, its the Automatic transmission that bucks and stops driving the tractor, i'm sorry for the bad wording.
Thanks for the cure i'll give that a try, draining the fluid and adding new fluid. it might be low also because when I drive up a hill or down a hill it has no drive power.
