Mode for playback of older 8mm tapes using Sony DCR-TRV730 ?

Question: I am planning on playing back some 8MM tapes recorded in 1990on Sony camcorder, not sure what mode I recorded them in. What modeshould I use to play back the tapes on a Sony DCR-TRV730 Digital 8 Video HandycamCamcorders to get the best quality for editing on my PC with MS Movie Maker?

...........manufacturer note>>
"Note on Recording mode Your camcorder records and plays back in the SP (standard play) mode and in the LP (long play) mode. Select SP or LP in the menu settings (p. 78). In the LP mode, you can record 1.5 times as long as in the SP mode".
"When you record a tape in the LP mode on your camcorder, we recommend that you play back the tape on your camcorder".

In 1990s Sony camcorder records movie in analog format so playing in digital camcorder like DCR-TRV730 doesn't mean it will be converted in digital format and you can not import file in PC for editing purpose. You will get analog signal while playing back old cassettes.

Regarding SP, LP speed, its decided at time of recording. Camera sens SP or LP automatically in playback and set itself accordingly.

If you want to convert old cassettes into digital format, connect our camcorder to DVD recorder and burn DVD which is digital format, copy DVD files in to PC and do desired editing.

Playback 8mm camcorder tape fuzzy

8 mm and the newer super 8 mm video tapes are different. You can't use super 8 mm in old player. And old tapes won't play well in new super 8 mm players. Like Sony!

My sony dcr-trv250 ntsc does not play videos that were recorded on my old samsung scx904 or alittle older sony that my father in law had let us borrow before we got ours...why? and is there some way to...

Your DCR-TRV250 uses a Digital 8 system to record and playback information on its cassette whereas the older Analog 8mm machines used the analog system. Unfortunately the two are incompatible.

Viewing SONY 8mm Tapes -- Please help

The older tapes were shot on a 8mm camcorder and the camcorder you have wil not play them becasue it doesn't have backwards compatability with the older format. The tapes you recorded are on a digital 8 camcorderr and it is different encoding than the one you recorded the other 60 tapes with. You will need to find either a dcr-trv 350 trv 530 trv 730 ect as these have the ability to play all the tapes.
Or find an older 8mm camcorder to play your tapes with.
Hope this helps

Sony DCR-TRV145E Digital 8 camcorder - won't play or record.

Fortunately they are still making 8mm camcorders usually running less the $200 to replace. It could be more cost effective to get a new model for that price as well. I couldn't record on my Sony 8mm camcorder anymore after five years of use and over 100 tapes that I had recorded. It's plays back but that's about it.

Sony TRV510-playback, audio choppy, image isn't clear

I was having the exact same problems, and I read a post on this website somewhere recommending that I just record a few seconds of video on a blank portion of tape and then the camera should start playing video normally again.

I tried it, and IT WORKED!!
