I recently got a Netgear N600 router with the USB port on it. I hook up my external WD 1TB drive to the router and nothing shows up even with hitting refresh, any suggestions?

seems that drive configuration needs to be done when connected to pc first then after it's recognized, added to network router

Just an FYI for anyone else with a similar problem. I had my buddy look at it and it was discovered that the problem was with the power cord.
If your hard drive is still under warranty, call WD and ask that they send you a new power cord. It worked for me instantly.
Worth trying anyway,

sounds like the hard drive is failing... i suggest you find yourself a data recovery program soon

You have a bad power supply. You can probably get a new adapter for it.

Plug the drive into your PC.
Right Click on My Computer (or Computer in Vista/Windows 7) and select Manage.
Click on Disk Management.
Right Click the Volume in question and select Format. Select FAT32 in the options.

I had this same issue. Found it to be a sequencing issue. Plug the USB into the router with the power off to the HDD. Power on the HDD and you should be able to get to it fine. Also make sure you have the latest firmware on the router.

The model number for my TB drive is WDBAAF0010HBK
I have the drive software installed on my pc and it still does not show up on my router. I cannot find anything in the PDF that tells me how to configure it to run via the USB port on my router.
one step at a time please
connect ext drive directly to pc and let's make sure pc can see it without router
then we'll work on that next issue
Yes it can and I also tried my laptop and had no problems with Win Vista or Win 7 seeing it
ok so now we talk about the router i see from specs that the route has a usb port and the wd can be accessed that way I checked both websites, and there is nothing to suggest this won't work, but here's my recommend. Contact WD support first, and ask them for drivers for that netgear router they are usually much more helpful(sometimes) than Netgear folks(who don't have much clue on integrating storage platforms on their network components)
try that first and let me know I'd do a side by side session on this usually but not at that level here yet
ok will do!
