Unfortunately, the Ematic AT102 does not have a tuner for cable television. It only has a ATSC (digital over-the-air) tuner. You need to connect it to an TV antenna and then search for channels. Depending on where you live, you may need an external antenna to get sufficient signal strength to receive local channels. See
http://www.tvfool.com for signal strength information in your area.
Older cable signals are NTSC (same as analog over-the-air). Newer digital cable is QAM. (Some channels are broadcast as clear QAM which don't need a cable box with some tuners/TVs.)
To record your cable, you will need a different type of DVR/set-top box. An old VCR or DVD recorder with an NTSC tuner would work to record analog cable. There are a few ATSC converter boxes that also support clear QAM. This is one of the models:

I wish that I had better news for you. Other options are available for NTSC, ATSC or QAM tuners. Please add a comment with more information about your cable service if you'd like extra information on these options.
